Wrestling Defeats Davidson, Falls to Northwestern and Eastern Michigan at Windy City Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Drexel wrestling team concluded competition at the Windy City Duals hosted by Northwestern University on Saturday after going 1-2. The Dragons defeated Davidson, 39-0 to lead off the day, but then fell to No. 16 Northwestern, 28-15 and later Eastern Michigan, 22-19. Kevin Devoy Jr. won all three of his matches, which moves the 133-pounder to 8-0 thus far on the season.
Drexel got off to a strong start as it swept Davidson to pick up its first dual meet victory of the season. Tanner Shoap earned a forfeit at 125 pounds to start things off, putting the Dragons up six points after the first match. Devoy followed with a 9-2 decision to give Drexel a 9-0 lead, and then Franco Ferraina secured an 18-2 technical fall at 141 to put the Dragons up by 14. Next, Matthew Cimato earned an 8-2 victory at 149 before Noel Blanco finished with a 14-4 major decision at 157. First-year starters Nick Elmer and Stephen Loiseau secured decisions in the next two matches before Alex DeCiantis pinned Davidson's Ryan Devlin 56 seconds into the match. Freshmen Joshua Murphy and Joey Goodhart rounded out the dual with wins at 197 and 285, respectively, to secure a 39-0 victory for the Dragons.
The Dragons started off strong again as their dual with No. 16 Northwestern began with a 4-2 decision from Shoap and a win-by-fall from Devoy to put Drexel ahead early, 9-0. David Pearce stepped in at 141 for Drexel, but dropped a 9-2 decision to the Wildcats' Jameson Oster. In the 149 match, Cimato lost 6-1 decision to the No. 1 ranked Jason Tsirtsis, which narrowed the Dragons' lead to 9-6. Drexel was able to pull away again to a 15-6 lead as Blanco received a win by forfeit at 157 pounds. However, Northwestern swept the remainder of the matches to come from behind and earn a 28-15 win.
In the final dual of the day, Drexel started out with a 6-0 deficit after forfeiting the 125 match. Devoy edged out Eastern Michigan's Vincent Pizzuto with a 5-4 decision at 133 to cut the Eagles' lead in half, 6-3. Pearce then earned an 8-0 major decision at 141 to give the Dragons the lead and Cimato followed with a win-by-fall at the 5:55 mark to put Drexel ahead, 13-6. Eastern Michigan retaliated over the next two matches, with a 5-3 decision at 157 and a 9-1 major decision at 165 to tie things up at 13 all. Loiseau earned a 6-2 decision in the 174 match to regain a Drexel lead and then DeCiantis followed with a 3-2 win at 184 to make the score 19-13 with two matches to go. Eastern Michigan's Anthony Abro picked up a 2-1 decision over Murphy at 197 to cut the deficit to three points and leaving the heavyweight match to decide the fate of the dual. At 285, the Eagles'Gage Hutchinson earned a win-by-fall to put the final score at 22-19 and give Eastern Michigan the come-from-behind victory.
The Dragons, now 1-3 in dual meets on the season, will return home on Saturday, Dec. 13 to host EIWA opponent Navy at the Daskalakis Athletic Center at 7 p.m.
