Philadelphia, Pa.. – Frantz Massenat scored a game-high 24 points and Chris Fouch nailed a key three-pointer late in the game as Drexel defeated the College of Charleston on Senior Night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 56-45.
Drexel (16-12, 8-7 CAA) closed the game with a 13-3 run to take control and win for the third time in their last four outings. With the score tied at 43, Rodney Williams made a nice drop step for a lay-up to give the Dragons the lead for good. Fouch and Massenat each made a pair of free throws to put Drexel up by six points. Charleston (14-16, 9-9 CAA) answered with a lay-up by David Wishon, but then Massenat found Fouch, who drilled a three-pointer with 2:10 left to give the Dragons a 52-45 lead.
The Dragons trailed by six at halftime, 28-22. Early in the second half, Drexel's offense got going. The Dragons went on an 11-0 run and held the Cougars without a point for almost six minutes. Charleston was able to stay close and eventually tied the game with 5:15 remaining on a Willis Hall jump shot.
Drexel's defense continued its strong play as of late. The Dragons held the Cougars to 33 percent from the field and to just 27 percent in the second half. It was the seventh straight game Drexel has held its opponents to under 40 percent shooting.
Massenat became just the second Dragon ever to score 1,600 career points and hand out more than 500 assists. Michael Anderson is the only other player to accomplish the feat. Massenat now sits in seventh place on the career scoring list, just one point behind Mike DeRocckis for sixth place. Fouch inched his way closer to the 1,700-point mark. He now has 1,688 career points at the school.
Dartaye Ruffin closed his home career with a good night. The Massachusetts native was 4-for-5 from the floor and had a game-high 10 rebounds. It was his third straight game with at least 10 rebounds and gave him 819 rebounds in his career. He is now tied for seventh all-time in career rebounds with Chaz Crawford.
The game also marked the final home appearance for Jake Lerner, Stevan Manojlovic and Goran Pantovic. Hall led the Cougars with nine points. Theo Johnson added eight points as the teams split their regular-season series.
The Dragons close the regular season on Saturday afternoon in Boston. Drexel and Northeastern play at 1 p.m. in Matthews Arena. The game can be heard on Drexeldragons.com.
