2/9/2014 4:01:00 PM | Women's Tennis
The women won each of their matches in straight sets and won all but one singles match in the days competition. In doubles competition, the Dragons were aggressive at the net and each moved together during their respective matches. Erin Bowsher and Lea Winkler won in the No. 2 doubles position, 6-0. Teammates Nicole Pivonka and Fiorella Coria also won their match, 6-1, leaving Zeynep Mafa and Marcela Rosales to end their match at the No. 1 position, unfinished.
In singles, Pivonka played aggressively and with quality positioning to take down her opponent, 6-0, 6-3. Due to an injury, Mafa had not played for over two weeks, but managed to stay focused and be consistent in her shot selection, and beat out her competition, 6-4, 6-4. In No. 3, Rosales fought to a 7-5, 6-3, win using aggressive play and quick footwork. Bowsher also maneuvered her way to the win, overcoming an injury and going 6-3, 7-6 (5). Coria won her match with good forward movement as well as a solid first serve. She gave the Dragons another point with a final score of 6-2, 6-0.
The men showed great movement and communicated well throughout doubles play. Their first serves and returns were key to the eventual point win. Skyler Davis and Dan Koehler won in a 6-3 decision. Xabier Saavedra and teammate Alex Fioravante also dominated for the 6-2 win, while Badr Ouabdelmoumen and Daniel Hansen ended their match unfinished.
Singles play showed the men's true resilience. No. 1 Ouabdelmoumen exercised his mental toughness to make directional changes that were key to his, 6-4, 6-5 (1) win. At No. 2 Fioravante's quick footwork and consistent play took him to a, 6-2, 6-5 (3), defeat over the Red Flash. Saavedra stayed focused and in position to take his match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Stauskas drove it home with a, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 match using focused shot selection.
The women return to the court on Sunday, February 16 when they will take on Howard at the Drexel Armory at 11 a.m. On Wednesday, February 12 the men will take on Temple at the Legacy Center for an 8 a.m. match.
