Drexel Crew Records Three Victories in Knecht Cup Regatta Grand Finals

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel crew has completed a successful weekend of competition at the Knecht Cup Regatta at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. Drexel sent 12 boats to Sunday's finals and took home three first place grand final finishes.
"Overall it was definitely good for us to compete that well against such good competition," Paul Savell, Drexel's Director of Rowing, said about the team's Knecht Cup Regatta performance. "We're really happy with the progress we're making as a team right now, and we're always looking to get better."
The men's varsity pair kicked off Drexel's weekend at the Knecht Cup in the Phoebe J. Fry boat in lane five, where they finished second in their heat with a time of 7:33.85 to advance to the afternoon's semifinals. In the semifinals, the men's varsity pair finished in first place with a time of 7:45.35 to advance to Sunday's grand final where they finished fourth with a time of 7:52.67.
The men's second varsity four raced in the Toby & Kim Oxholm boat from lane two in the grand final on Sunday morning, finishing in second place after getting narrowly edged by Villanova with a time of 7:22.96.
Drexel's men's varsity four got off to a quick start in the LeBow School of Business boat in lane six, posting a winning time of 6:52.47 to advance to the Sunday final, where they finished in third place with a time of 6:52.23.
Drexel's men's second freshmen eight took to the water in the grand final in lane five in the Peggy Greenwalt boat against Delaware and came out on top, winning after crossing the finish line at 6:36.62.
The men's freshmen eight concluded the opening round for the Dragons in the Joseph Greipp boat in lane three and won their heat by posting a 6:15.75 time. In the semifinals, the Dragons finished second crossing the finish line at 6:24.83 to advance to Sunday's grand final. The men's freshmen eight took home third place honors in Sunday's grand final with a time of 6:19.83.
The Dragons' men's second varsity eight took to the water in the Annette Pennoni boat in lane six, outracing the competition with a 6:07.35 time for the first place finish to advance to Sunday's grand final. In the grand final, Drexel rowed to victory with a time of 6:03.55, outracing second place finisher Hobart by nearly two seconds.
The men's varsity eight raced in the Lois Krall boat and won their opening race with a time of 6:01.32 from lane six. Drexel continued their strong day in the semifinals, finishing with the fastest time of the round (5:53.55) to move onto the grand final on Sunday. In Sunday's grand final, Drexel finished in second place with a time of 6:02.05.
The Dragons' women's freshmen four comfortably advanced to the semifinals with a third place time of 8:12.87 from lane four in the Dawn Byers boat. The second afternoon semifinals featured Drexel finishing fourth with a time of 8:27.34 to advance to Sunday's petite final where they finished sixth, crossing the finish line at 8:44.28.
The women's varsity four took to the water in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat in lane one, finishing third in their heat with a time of 7:47.19 to advance to the semifinals. In the second semifinal, the Dragons women's varsity four finished in third place with a time of 7:40.75 to move onto Sunday's petite final. Drexel took home first place in the petite final, pacing the competition with a time of 8:04.65.
Drexel's women's freshmen eight took to lane three in the Marlene Buckley boat and won their first heat with a 7:05.50 time to advance to the semifinals. The women's freshmen eight won again in the semifinals with a time of 7:13.04 to move onto Sunday's grand final. The Dragons went on to win the grand final with a time of 7:14.69, less than two seconds ahead of Buffalo.
Drexel's women's second varsity eight raced in the Maria Papadakis boat in lane five, narrowly edging Old Dominion with a time of 7:03.01 to finish second and move on to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Drexel finished second in their heat with a time of 6:52.64 to advance to Sunday's grand final. Drexel finished fourth in a close women's second varsity eight grand final on Sunday afternoon with a time of 6:54.65.
In the Marlene Buckley II boat, the women's varsity eight took to lane six, winning their heat with a time of 6:58.17. They finished second in their semifinal heat with a time of 6:47.15 to advance to Sunday's grand final. In the grand final, Drexel finished sixth in a close race with a time of 6:54.26.
The women's second varsity four took to the water on Saturday in the Dawn Byers boat in lane three, finishing fifth in their heat with a time of 8:54.02 which unfortunately was not enough to reach Sunday's final.
Drexel crew will return to the water at the Kerr Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday April 19.

The women's second varsity four took to the water on Saturday in the Dawn Byers boat in lane three, finishing fifth in their heat with a time of 8:54.02 which unfortunately was not enough to reach Sunday's final.
Drexel crew will return to the water at the Kerr Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday April 19.
