Men's and Women's Crew Victorious at the Kerr Cup

PHILADELPHIA -- With the Kerr family looking on at the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa., Drexel's women's varsity eight won the Lela H. Kerr Cup and the men's varsity eight won the Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup for the fourth straight year at the 48th annual Kerr Cup Regatta.
"It was a great day of racing," Drexel's Director of Rowing, Paul Savell, said. "I think all of the boats rowed really well with the conditions, and on top of it, it was great to have the whole Kerr family out here to hand out the medals at the finish line."
Drexel's women's freshmen four began the day with the "A" boat in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat in lane two and then the "B" boat in lane six in the Dawn Byers boat. Drexel's "A" boat finished their heat in second place to advance to the final with a time of 7:29.49, while the "B" boat finished their heat in fourth place with a time of 7:59.97. In the final, Drexel "A" finished in fourth place with a time of 5:20.17 after a floating restart at the 1,500 meter mark.
The women's varsity four took to lane one in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat, finishing their opening heat in first place with a time of 7:17.71. The Dragons were narrowly edged in the final by Villanova, finishing in second place with a time of 7:07.88.
The women's freshmen eight went straight to the final with Drexel racing in the Marlene Buckley boat from lane one and finishing in second place with a time of 6:45.14.
Drexel's women's second varsity eight went straight to the final where the Dragons raced from lane one in the Maria Papadakis boat, finishing with a second place time of 6:29.59.
Drexel's women's varsity eight began their quest for the Lela H. Kerr Cup in the Marlene Buckley II boat from lane one and won their heat with a time of 6:21.00. In the final, the Dragons topped last year's winner, Washington College, and all other competition, winning with a time of 6:18.17 and retaining the coveted cup.
The Drexel men's freshmen four raced in the Toby & Kim Oxholm boat in lane four and won their heat with a time of 6:36.10. In the final, the Dragons were edged out by Colgate, finishing in second place with a time of 6:25.23
Kicking off the day's finals was the men's lightweight varsity four where Drexel finished in fourth place with a time of 6:37.13 in lane one in the LeBow School of Business boat.
Drexel had a boat in two of the opening heats of the men's varsity pair, and both pulled out victories. The "A" boat raced from lane three in the Katherine M.L. Buckley with a final time of 7:03.12, while the "B" boat raced from lane four in the Julia Grace crossing the finish line at 7:09.33. The two boats finshed one-two in the final, with the "A" boat's 7:03.13 edging the "B" boat's 7:05.69.
In the men's freshmen eight final, the Dragons took to lane two in the Vince Vidas boat where they won with a final time of 5:50.64 as the river's current really started to pick up speed.
The Dragons raced two boats in the men's second varsity eight final with the "A" boat in the Anette Pennoni in lane one and the "B" boat in the Vince Vidas in lane six. The two boats paced the competition, finishing in first and second with the "A" boat crossing the line with a winning 5:39.32 and the "B" boat finishing closely behind at 5:54.80.
The Dragons' men's varsity eight began their attempt to retain the Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup in the Lois Krall boat from lane one, winning their heat with a time of 6:21.00 The Dragons won the cup for the fourth straight year with a blazing fast time in the final of 5:34.69.
Drexel crew returns to action on Saturday April 26 at the Bergen/Kelly Cup.
