Crew Repeats as Overall Champions at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta
5/10/2014 8:58:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Crew won the overall team points title along with four medals at the 76th annual Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa. on May 9 and 10. This is the second year in a row that the Dragons have won the team title at the prestigious regatta.
"It's something the team has been talking about all year," Paul Savell, Drexel Director of Rowing, said when asked about repeating as the overall team champion. "Everybody had a part of scoring points for the team and that was great."
Drexel closed out competition with 42 total points, seven more than both of the second place finishers, Bucknell and UMass. Drexel's men tallied 24 points, finishing in second place and only one point behind Michigan. The women finished in third place with 18 points, behind UMass and Bucknell.
The Dragons' four medals included one gold medal, two silver medals and one bronze. After recording a silver medal in 2013, the men's second varsity eight took the step forward as a team to take home the gold. Both the first and second women's varsity eights earned silver medals. The women's varsity eight's silver medal was their best finished ever at the Dad Vail and it proved to be an important one in the point total, as Bucknell was on their tail heading into the race, but Drexel finished in second while Bucknell finished sixth. The men's freshmen four earned a bronze medal to start off the finals.
On Saturday morning in the semifinals, Drexel advanced eight boats to the grand finals, including all six of the team's eight-seat boats. The team's eight boats in the finals were the best in the field, as Bucknell had the second most with seven and Grand Valley was in third with six. In the qualifying heats on Friday, May 9, the Dragons advanced 11 of the 13 boats they entered (10 to the semifinals, one straight to the finals), one shy of the school record that was set last year. All six of Drexel's eights won their respective races.
Drexel's men's second varsity eight improved on their 2013 silver medal, winning the gold this time around with a time of 6:38.09. They paced their competition in the semifinal heat at 6:06.37 to advance to the final. The men's second varsity eight began competition from lane three in the Annette Pennoni boat on Friday and crossed the finish line at 5:51.43 to win and advance to the Saturday morning semifinals in lane three.
After winning gold in 2013, the women's second varsity eight took home the silver medal in a tight race and less than a boat length behind Bucknell, finishing with a time of 7:33.51. The last Drexel boat to race in Friday's qualifying heats was the women's second varsity eight, who took to lane four in the Maria Papadakis boat and came away with first place and a time of 6:29.29 to advance straight to the Saturday final. On Friday, they capped off the qualifying day where all six of Drexel's eights finished in first place.
In a pivotal point late in the Dad Vail, the women's varsity eight brought home the silver medal with a time of 6:34.78 which was less than five seconds behind UMass. The second place finish was the best women's varsity eight finish in Drexel history at the Dad Vail Regatta. Drexel won their semifinal with a time of 6:48.63 to advance to the grand final. The women's varsity eight began competition from lane three in the Marlene Buckley II boat, winning with a time of 6:34.23 to advance to the semifinal in lane four.
Drexel's men's freshmen four took home the Dragons' first medal of the day, a bronze behind Oklahoma City and NY Maritime, with a time of 7:35.54. In the Saturday semifinal in lane one, they finished in first with a time of 6:50.97 to advance to the final. The men's freshmen four opened up their competition from lane three in the Dawn Byers boat, crossing the finish line at 6:50.90 to advance.
The men's freshmen eight finished in fourth place overall after the grand final, recording a time of 6:54.59. The Dragons crossed the finish line in first place in Saturday's semifinals with a time of 6:13.79 to move onto the final at 2:03 p.m. They raced their qualifying heat on Friday afternoon from lane three in the Vince Vidas boat, and after a slight mechanical issue with the three seat, Drexel took the heat by a wide margin, crossing the finish line at 6:02.68 to advance to the semifinals.
Drexel concluded up competition when the men's varsity eight finished in fourth place overall, finishing the grand final with a time of 5:47.62. In their semifinal race, Drexel paced the competition, winning with a time of 5:56.10 to advance to the grand final. The men's varsity eight initially took to the water when they raced from lane three in the Lois Krall boat, recording a heat-winning time of 5:41.28 to advance to the semifinal on Saturday morning in lane three.
After a weather delay that lasted about two hours, the men's varsity four concluded competition placed fifth overall after a time in the finals of 6:45.63. On Saturday morning in lane two, they came from behind down the stretch to post a 6:55.57 and just barely edge Rollins by less than a tenth of a second to advance to the final. They were the first boat on Friday to launch in the Dragons' title defense when they were in lane four in the LeBow College of Business boat and won, pacing the competition with a time of 6:32.66.
The women's freshmen eight finished the Dad Vail sixth overall after the grand final, crossing the finish line at 8:11.36. In their semifinal, they posted a time of 7:19.12 to finish in second place and advance to the final. On Friday, they took to the water in lane three in the Marlene Buckley boat, winning their heat with a time of 6:51.87 to advance to the Saturday semifinal in lane three.

In the semifinal final, they finished in third place, crossing the finish line at 7:39.43 which was just short of qualifying for the final. The Dragons were the defending gold medalist.
To finish up the fours on Friday, Drexel's men's lightweight four raced from lane four in the Tobey & Kim Oxholm boat and finished with a third place time of 6:42.65 to advance to Saturday's semifinals in lane six. In the semifinal, they finished in fifth place, failing to advance, posting a time of 7:16.32.
The women began competition when the women's varsity four hit the water in lane three in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat and recorded a second place finish, crossing the finish line at 7:20.03. They comfortably qualified for the semifinals on Saturday, where they finished in third place with a time of 7:54.51, falling just short of qualifying for the final.
In Friday's qualifiers, the women's varsity pair raced from lane three in the Katherine M.L. Buckley boat, crossing the finish line at 8:23.28, which fell short of qualifying for the semifinals.
Also in Friday's qualifiers, the women's freshmen four took to lane four in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat and finished with a time of 8:03.60, which unfortunately fell short of qualifying for the semifinals.
