PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Tennis continued its string of early season success on Sunday, as the men's and women's teams each defeated St. Francis (N.Y.), 7-0, at the Drexel Armory.
The men improved to 5-1 on the year, while the women are now a perfect 4-0.
"The team played well and fought hard," head coach Mehdi Rhazali said. "We played with a new line-up today, which allows us to develop more depth."
In the afternoon, the Dragons' men continued the job that the women started. Drexel won the doubles point after picking up wins from the pairs of Alex Fioravante and Xabier Saavedra, Hamza Laalej and Dan Koehler and Badr Ouabdelmoumen and Daniel Hansen.
Kashyap Ashok was the star of singles play for the Dragons, playing from the second position and pulling out a hard fought three-set victory where he came from a set down, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Ouabdelmoumen took care of business with a tough 7-5, 7-5 win. Saavedra and Fioravante came away victorious with 6-2, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 wins, respectively. Laalej and Koehler brought the match home in the fifth and sixth positions, winning 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1, respectively.
"Kashyap played No. 1 at Jackson State and knows what it's like at the top of the line-up," Rhazali said. "He is used to the pressure, and he can play well when he is challenged."
In the morning, Drexel's women got the team off to a hot start, keeping the Terriers off the scoreboard in all nine matches. Beginning with doubles, the Dragons swept St. Francis (N.Y.) 6-0 in each of the three matches, getting wins from the pairs of Erin Bowsher and Ryshena Providence, Lea Winkler and Kendra Bunch and Jennifer White and Aysenil Orhon.
Continuing into singles play, Bowsher, Providence and Winkler each picked up 6-0, 6-0 wins. Fiorella Coria, Orhon and White each earned their first victories of the spring season with 6-0, 6-0 wins.
Drexel Tennis will have the week off before welcoming Morgan State to the Drexel Armory on Sunday, Feb 1. The women will begin play at 10 a.m., while the men follow at 1 p.m.
