PHILADELPHIA -- Drexel Tennis started Alumni Weekend in style, as the men picked up shutout wins over Rider and La Salle while the women beat Monmouth at Vidas Courts on Saturday.
The men beat both the Explorers and the Broncs by a score of 7-0, and nobody in the Dragons' lineup dropped a set. Senior leader Xabier Saavedra picked up two wins playing at the top of the ladder, while newcomers Sinan Orhon and Balaji Lakshmanan earned victories in the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, respectively. Daniil Ginzburg, Kashyap Ashok and Vuk Subotic filled out spots four through six with two wins apiece on the day.
Drexel's women put together a similarly dominant day, beating Monmouth, 6-1. After Erin Bowsher fell in the top spot, the Dragons picked up their senior with a slew of strong performances. Freshman Anisiya Simpson battled to a 6-1, 6-4 win followed by a sweep by Kendra Bunch. In the bottom half of the singles ladder, Ryshena Providence, Fiorella Coria and Jennifer White all cruised to victories, dropping only two sets each.
Both Drexel's men and women swept doubles play as they further solidify doubles pairings heading into ITAs.
Sunday, Oct. 18 will be Drexel Tennis Alumni Day. The events will run from 9 a.m. to noon at Vidas Courts, featuring skills drills and matches between current and former Dragons.
The Dragons return to competition on Thursday, Oct. 22 at the ITA Northeast Regionals. The men's tournament will take place at Yale, while the women will be played at Dartmouth.
