Anchorage, Alaska – The University of San Diego edged Drexel at the Great Alaska Shootout on Saturday, 62-59. Sammy Mojica scored 15 points to lead Drexel. Drexel (0-6) shot just 29 percent in the game.
Drexel was within striking distance the entire second half but was never able to take the lead. The Dragons made it a one-possession game numerous times, but every time the team had a chance to tie it up, San Diego either came up with a stop or Drexel turned it over. The Toreros (1-5) turned the ball over late and Drexel had its chance, but Tavon Allen drove the lane and missed. USD's Brett Bailey grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made a pair of free throws to seal the game.
The Toreros led 31-30 at intermission after a closely contested first half. San Diego led by as many as seven with six minutes remaining before the Dragons cut it to one at the break. Rashann London had a big half for the Dragons, scoring 10 points and knocking down a pair of three-pointers. Mojica added nine first half points.
London and Tavon Allen each finished the game with 10 points. London handed out four assists as well. Kazembe Abif had a game-high 11 rebounds for Drexel.
Marcus Harris scored 14 points to lead three Toreros in double figures with 14 points. San Diego shot 44 percent and overcame 15 turnovers. Drexel came up with 19 offensive rebounds but was able to score only 16 points with those second chance opportunities.
The Dragons will head back to Philadelphia tonight and have the week off. They next play LaSalle on Saturday afternoon at Gola Arena.
