Men's Basketball Earns City 6 Win at La Salle, 66-53
12/5/2015 3:41:00 PM | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA -- Drexel men's basketball made the short trip to La Salle on Saturday for the first time since 2000 and came away with the 66-53 victory at Gola Arena. The win, which is the Dragons' first over the Explorers since December of 1997, makes Bruiser Flint the first Drexel head coach to beat all five Philadelphia Big 5 schools.
The Dragons were able to put two aspects of their game together that have been inconsistent in the early-going -- free throw shooting and perimeter defense. At the line, Drexel was 21-for-24. Tavon Allen, who led the way with a team-high 25 points, going 7-for-11 from the field and 3-for-3 from deep, also went a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Rodney Williams came into the game shooting 59 percent from the line, but turned it around and hit all six of his attempts. La Salle hit on just 15 of its 27 free throw attempts.
On defense, Drexel held La Salle's Jordan Price, who had come in averaging 27 points per game, to 19 points. Allen drew the defensive assignment on Price, and held the Explorer's offensive leader to 5-for-14 shooting from the floor and 1-for-5 from three-point range. Price came into the game shooting above 50 percent from the field and from three. The Dragons were also able to pressure La Salle's shooters into just 4-of-16 shooting from beyond the arc on the afternoon.
Drexel used a 10-0 run to grab the lead late in the first half. Down 22-18 at the 6:11 mark, the Dragons used two free throws from Williams, back-to-back threes from Allen and Sammy Mojica lay-up to flip the score to a 28-22 advantage. They would never give the lead back. After taking a 37-31 lead to the locker room at halftime, La Salle chipped away to tie the game at 43-43 with 14:01 to play. The Dragons responded, though, outscoring the Explorers 23-10 the rest of the way. Drexel went 12-for-14 from the free throw line in the second half, growing the lead to as many as 14 late in the half, to seal its first victory of the season.
Williams finished the game with 14 points and 13 rebounds for his third career double-double, helping the Dragons to a 41-32 advantage on the glass. He also added two blocked shots. Rashann London also finished with a dozen points, giving Drexel three players in double figures. La Salle only had one player other than Price in double figures in scoring. Cleon Roberts had 11 points.
Drexel (1-6) will have the week off for final exams before heading to Columbia, S.C. on Dec. 15 where the Dragons will square off against Frank Martin's South Carolina Gamecocks.
