Wilmington, N.C. – UNCW had four players score in double figures and led the entire way in a 75-63 win against Drexel on Thursday afternoon at the Trask Coliseum. It was the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams. UNCW (9-3) stayed undefeated at home, while Drexel fell to 2-10 overall.
The Seahawks led 8-3 early before Drexel tied it on a pair of Rodney Williams' free throws that made it 8-8. UNCW then took the lead for good and held the Dragons at bay the rest of the game. The Seahawks shot 55 percent in the first half and were 5-for-7 from deep as they opened up an 11-point lead at intermission, 41-30.
The Dragons battled the entire way. They were able to get the lead down to eight with just under four minutes to go when Terrell Allen knocked down a short jump shot. That was as close as the Dragons could get. They put the press on, but twice the Seahawks broke it and scored on uncontested dunks by Devontae Cacok. The Dragons played much better defense in the second half but made just 29 percent of their shots in the final 20 minutes
Rodney Williams led Drexel with 15 points and 15 rebounds, 10 on the offensive end, before fouling out. The Dragons' big man picked up his fourth career double-double. Williams did most of his damage from the line. The junior 4-for-15 from the floor, but sank seven of his nine free throw attempts. His 15 boards were a career-high. Rashann London scored 13 points and had a team-high five assists. Terrell Allen was the only Dragon to shoot 50 percent on the day. The freshman was 4-for-8 and scored 11 points.
One bright spot for the Dragons was the return of Ahmad Fields, The sophomore, who transferred to Drexel from Utah, played in just his second game of the year due to injury. Fields scored six points and had five rebounds in 11 minutes.
UNCW forced the Dragons into a season-high 18 turnovers. The Seahawks didn't fare much better as they committed 17 turnovers. UNCW made 29 free throws in the game. Chris Flemmings was 15-for-16 from the charity stripe and led all players with 17 points. C.J. Bryce added 14 points, while Cacok scored 11.
The Dragons will drive to Elon and face the Phoenix on Saturday in their first game of the new year. Tip-off on Saturday is at 4 p.m. and the game can be seen locally in Philadelphia on The Comcast Network.
