North Carolina Defeats Wrestling, 22-13

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Drexel wrestling team concluded the weekend road trip with a 22-13 loss to North Carolina on Sunday afternoon.
Zack Fuentes started off the day for the Dragons with a 5-2 win at 125 over North Carolina's Alex Rinaldi. Kevin Devoy Jr., who is currently ranked 16th in the nation, gave Drexel a 7-0 lead with a major decision at 133. The Tar Heels' Joey Ward who is ranked No. 10 got North Carolina on the board with a major decision over David Pearce and then Christian Barber picked up a 5-4 decision over Matthew Cimato to knot things up at 7-7. Noel Blanco put the Dragons ahead with a 3-1 overtime win over Chris Mears, but then No. 15 Ethan Ramos gave North Carolina back the lead with a technical fall in the 165 match.
The Tar Heels extended their lead to 16-10 as John Michael Staudenmayer downed Stephen Loiseau at 174. Alex DeCiantis came up next for Drexel and put the Dragons within striking distance with a 5-3 win in sudden victory at 184 pounds. However, the Tar Heels secured decisions in the last two matches to pull away and earn a 22-13 win.
The loss moves the Dragons to 6-9 overall and 3-1 in EIWA competition. Drexel returns to action on Friday when they travel to face Rider at 7:00 p.m.
