Williamsburg, Va. – New Haven natives Freddie Wilson and Tavon Allen combined for 46 points as Drexel stunned William & Mary, 80-66, at Kaplan Arena in William & Mary Hall. The Dragons jumped out to a big first half lead and went on to earn the unlikely road win on Senior Night against the CAA's top team.
Wilson, who became a starter after Damion Lee went down with an injury two games ago, scored a career-high 24 points in the game. He made six of his nine three-point attempts and finished 8-for-12 from the field. Wilson added four assists, two steals and committed just one turnover. Allen, who came off a tough 1-for-9 night shooting in Drexel's last game, nailed five three-pointers and had a season-high 22 points. Allen also had six boards. Rodney Williams also had a career-high with 18 points. He was 8-for-11 from the line and had a team-best nine rebounds. Mohamed Bah and Tyshawn Myles each grabbed eight rebounds as the Dragons outrebounded the Tribe, 36-24.
The Dragons (11-18, 9-9) held off the Tribe late in the game. William & Mary cut it to nine on three occasions, but the Dragons wouldn't let them get any closer. Drexel was 17-for-22 from the line in the second half. Overall, the Dragons shot 81 percent from the line as they evened their conference record at 9-9. Drexel has now finished .500 or above in seven straight seasons, the longest current streak in the CAA.
Drexel played as well as it possibly could in the first half. Despite the injuries, the remaining seven Dragons took care of the ball, made three-pointers and played well on the defensive end. Drexel made seven of its 12 long-range attempts in the first 20 minutes. Freddie Wilson was 4-for-5, while Tavon Allen was 3-for-5. Inside, Rodney Williams had 10 first half points for Drexel, which shot 50 percent and committed just one turnover in the opening period.
William & Mary shot 56 percent in the second half and was 7-for-15 from deep in the final 20 minutes as its comeback came up short. Marcus Thornton finished with a team-high 19 points and six assists. Daniel Dixon, who returned from an injury for the first time in five games, didn't miss a beat, knocking down four three pointers and scoring 14 points. Terry Tarpey had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Drexel will be the seventh seed at the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association tournament. The Dragons will face Charleston on Friday night in Baltimore at approximately 8:30. Elon and Towson will play the opening game of the tournament at 6 p.m., with the Drexel game to follow.
