Elon, N.C. – Four Dragons scored in double figures as Drexel held off a late Elon rally to defeat the Phoenix on its home court, 67-63. It was the fourth straight win for the Dragons who are now 6-5 in CAA play.
The Dragons (8-14) saw their 11-point second half lead evaporate late as Elon (11-12, 3-8) started to make its shots down the stretch. Elon made it a four-point game with 2:15 left when Elijah Bryant sank a long three-pointer. The Phoenix appeared to stop the Dragons on the next possession, but Sammy Mojica grabbed an offensive board and put home the miss to put Drexel up six. The Dragons came up with a defensive stand and Rashann London was fouled with 1:11 to go. The freshman made both ends of a one-and-one to extend the lead to eight. Elon made one last run when Colin Luther made two free throws and, after an ill-advised shot attempt by Sammy Mojica, cut it to three when Austin Hamilton sank two free throws with just 14 seconds to play. Damion Lee was fouled and made one of two from the line to give the visitors the win.
Drexel started the game 6-for-6 from the floor which included three three-pointers. Allen knocked down a pair of treys early and Drexel was in control for most of the half. The Dragons took a 13-point lead when Lee made one of two from the line with 7:03 to go in the half. However, Drexel made just one field goal over the last eight minutes of the half and the Phoenix chipped away at the lead. Colin Luther's bucket as time expired in the half trimmed the Drexel lead to 31-26.
Bryant was held in check most of the night by Tavon Allen. In the first meeting in Philadelphia, Braynt torched the Dragons for 32 points. On this night, Allen held the freshman to just 2-for-11 shooting. Allen also had 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Lee led the Dragons with 16 points, 13 of them coming in the first half. He also had eight boards and a team-high five assists. Lee moved into 14th place on Drexel's career scoring list with 1,432 career points. Mojica had 14 off the bench, while Mohamed Bah was also in double figures with 10 points. The sophomore had nine rebounds to lead the team.
Tanner Samson made five three-pointers and led Elon with 22 points. Hamilton added 10 points and eight rebounds. The Phoenix shot 41 percent (7-17) from deep, but struggled at the line, making just eight of 16 free throw attempts. Drexel shot 42 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Phoenix, 36-28.
The Dragons conclude their two-game road trip on Saturday. Drexel will tip-off at the College of Charleston at 5 p.m.
