Tavon Allen's 18 Points Lead Drexel Past Charleston for Fifth Straight Win
2/7/2015 6:56:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Charleston, S.C. – Tavon Allen tied a season-high with 18 points as Drexel defeated the College of Charleston, 59-45, for its fifth straight win. Drexel's defense was outstanding as it held the Cougars to just 29 percent shooting in the game, the lowest percentage the team has allowed this season. Drexel is now 7-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play and 9-14 overall. The Cougars fell to 7-18 and 2-10 in league play.
Allen was an efficient 6-for-10 from the floor and made four of his seven long-range attempts. The junior also had five assists. He scored 12 of his 18 in the second half as the Dragons built on their lead and didn't trail down the stretch. The lead extended to 18 points with just over six minutes to play.
Damion Lee, the CAA's leading scorer, had a rare off night. He was held to 12 points, but luckily for the Dragons, the team picked him up on the offensive end. Rodney Williams scored 10 points, mostly on dunks, and tied his career-high with five blocked shots. Rashann London chipped in with nine points, while Sammy Mojica added seven points and six rebounds. As a team, Drexel shot 49 percent overall and 60 percent (9-15) from deep.
Lee was able to move into 13th place on Drexel's career scoring list with 1,444. He passed Mike Kouser and is now just 30 points away from passing Phil Goss and moving into sole possession of 12th place.
Drexel's defense and Charleston's inability to convert inside was the story of the first half. The Cougars led 3-0 early on a free throw and a Cameron Barry bucket, but those would be their last points for quite some time. Drexel held the Cougars without a basket for a span of 8:32 to take the lead. Charleston missed 12 straight shots at one point, but still only trailed 13-5. The Cougars then cut it to three, but Drexel increased that margin to seven when Damion Lee nailed a three-pointer from the wing and was fouled. He sank it and Drexel's went ahead 17-10. The Dragons would go into intermission with a 27-18 lead. Charleston shot just 6-for-30 (20 percent) in the opening half. Adjehi Baru was frustrated by the Dragons' defense, going just 2-for-11 from the floor in the half.
Drexel's five game winning streak is the team's longest streak since the 19 game winning streak back in 2012. The Dragons will look to extend that streak at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Tuesday night. Drexel will host Towson in a CAA contest at 6 p.m. The game can be seen live on The Comcast Network.
