2/10/2015 9:04:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Philadelphia, Pa. – Drexel opened up a 14-point first half lead and held on to defeat Towson, 53-49, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Damion Lee scored 23 points as the Dragons (10-14, 8-5 CAA) won for the sixth straight time. Drexel's defense once again played well as it held its second straight opponent to under 50 points.
Drexel led for all but the first three minutes of the game. The Tigers (11-15, 4-9 CAA) came out strong in the second half and chipped away at Drexel's 12-point halftime lead. Towson's Four McGlynn nailed a three-pointer with 12:56 to go to cut Drexel's lead down to three at 33-30. The Dragons' lead remained in single digits the rest of the way. With Towson down just two with two minutes remaining, Towson's John Davis grabbed the rebound on a Tavon Allen miss, but was falling out of bounds. He tried to throw it back in under his own basket, but Drexel's Mohamed Bah knocked it down and made a lay-up, putting Drexel ahead, 48-44. Drexel would retain a two possession cushion until the final five seconds when McGlynn made all three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt. Drexel was able to get the ball in and Lee's two free throws iced the team's sixth consecutive victory.
Lee finished 6-for-11 from the floor. The junior was 11-for-11 from the line, marking the fourth time this season that he was perfect in 10 or more attempts from the charity stripe. Lee also had three steals. Rodney Williams came off the bench to score 10 points and block a season-high six shots. Five of Williams' blocks came in the first half.
McGlynn led Towson with 14 points. He was the only Tiger to score more than seven points. Davis returned to his home town and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Towson was held to just 31 percent shooting in the game. The Tigers came up with 23 offensive rebounds but only had 14 second chance points.
Lee scored 15 points in the first half, just two less than the entire Towson team, as Drexel led at the break, 29-17. Drexel went on a 10-0 run and held Towson without a field goal for a stretch of more than nine minutes to take a 14-6 lead. That lead would grow to as many as 14 points late when Sammy Mojica knocked down a three-pointer. The Dragons' defense held Towson to just 21 percent shooting in the first half. The Tigers made just four of their first 25 shots in the game.
Drexel is back in action in a rare Sunday evening game. The Dragons host Hofstra at the DAC at 5 p.m. on Sunday in a game that can be seen live on The Comcast Network. Hofstra defeated the Dragons earlier in the season in Hempstead. It was the last time the Dragons lost a game.
