PHILADELPHIA – Drexel men's tennis outlasted St. Francis (Pa.), 4-3, on Sunday at the Drexel Armory to get back into the win column.
The Dragons are now 9-4 overall on the season. They are 4-0 when coming off of a loss this year, yet to have dropped back-to-back matches.
"St. Francis (Pa.) is a team that has improved a lot in the last three years and they gave us a tough match today," head coach Mehdi Rhazali said. "The doubles point was very important, and we needed it to help build momentum going into singles. The seniors showed mental toughness and helped bring two more points as well as [Hamza] Laalej, who is finally healthy and in full match mode."
Beginning with doubles, the Dragons dropped the No. 1 match, but received strong showings in the second and third slots. Kashyap Ashok and Dan Koehler rolled, 6-2, in the No. 2 position, while Badr Ouabdelmoumen and Daniel Hansen, fresh off their Colonial Athletic Association Doubles Performer of the Week award, won a tough match at No. 3, 7-5.
In singles play, Drexel fell Nos. 1 and 2, but was picked up by the back end of the lineup. Alex Fioravante defeated Chris Jimenez, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 3 position. With the team score tied 2-2 heading into the final three singles matches, the Dragons took control. Hamza Laalej showed poise in the No. 5, spot, cruising to victory, 6-2, 6-1. Dan Koehler clinched the match at No. 6, winning 6-2, 7-5.
The Dragons will return to competition on Friday, March 6 at noon as they travel to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army. Drexel will return home to the Armory on Sunday, March 8 at 10:30 a.m. to play Wagner.
