
Crew Wins Bergen and Kelly Cups for Fourth Straight Year Saturday

PHILADELPHIA -- Drexel Crew's varsity eights won the Bergen and Kelly Cups for the fourth straight season Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River.
The Dragons' men have now won the Bergen Cup in six of the last seven years, including five straight. The women have won the Kelly Cup in each of the last four years, including six of the last seven.
Drexel's women's varsity eight won the Kelly Cup in the Marlene Buckley II boat with a time of 6:36.29, beating second-place Villanova by 7.5 seconds. The Dragons' men's varsity eight closed the day by winning the Bergen Cup in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, cruising to a 5:49.6 and a comfortable win over Temple's second-place time of 5:57.7.
The Blue and Gold was also successful with its second varsity eight boats as both picked up wins. The women, in the Maria Papadakis boat, narrowly edged Saint Joseph's as Drexel crossed the finish line at 6:52.53 and the Hawks followed close behind at 6:53.07. However, the men, in the Lois Krall boat, enjoyed a more comfortable margin, rowing to a 5:52.5 and beating Temple by 5.7 seconds.
Drexel's freshmen eights also continued strong 2015 spring seasons. The men, with the A in the Joseph Greipp boat and the B in the Vince Vidas boat, finished one-two on Saturday. The A rowed to a 5:57, while the B followed with a 6:07. The women, in the Marlene Buckley boat, finished second to Temple with a 7:03.29.
In the fours, the men finished second while the women finished fourth in a competitive race. In the LeBow College of Business boat boat, the men finished at 6:46.8, and Temple just edged out the victory with a 6:45.2. The women, in the Sandra Lee Sheller, finished with a 7:59.87, just behind third-place Villanova. Saint Joseph's won with a 7:44.02.
Rounding out the day were the men's freshmen four and men's second varsity four boats. The freshmen four, in the Oxholm boat, won with a 6:59.4, pacing second-place Villanova's 7:03.9. The second varsity four, in the LeBow College of Business boat, finished second with a time of 7:11.
Drexel Crew will have next week off in preparation for the 77th annual Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on Friday and Saturday, May 8-9. The Dragons have won the Dad Vail overall championship in back-to-back years heading in.
