HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Drexel men's soccer team took advantage of its opportunities on Saturday evening as the Dragons notched their first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season, 1-0 at James Madison. Ilai Shvika scored his first goal as a Dragon in the 35th minute, finishing a corner kick, and the Dragons made that goal stand up the rest of the way.
Drexel (2-6-1, 1-1-0) got its second-consecutive shutout from the defense as redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jacob Jordan improved his scoreless streak to 258:36. The Dragons were outshot 18-5 by James Madison (1-6-1, 0-1-0), but allowed the Dukes just one shot on goal, which Jordan corralled for his only save of the evening. Drexel scored on one of its two shots on goal, both of which were taken by Shvika.
Erik Alexandersson put up Drexel's first shot of the evening less than a minute into the game, but the game remained scoreless for over a half an hour as neither team could threaten the other's keeper. Then, the Dragons broke the scoreless tie in the 35th minute when they earned their second of four corners during the game. Dakota Peterson inserted it in front of the goal mouth, where Nick Bolton deflected it over to Shvika, who powered it into the back of the net for the score. Shvika's goal ended a 152:22 scoreless drought for the Dragons and gave them their first lead since their 1-0 victory over Penn on September 15.
Leading 1-0 at halftime, Drexel would face increased pressure from James Madison in the second half. The Dukes put up 12 shots after intermission to just two from the Dragons, but Drexel's defense held them at bay, allowing just the one shot on goal. The Dukes put up several shots in the closing minutes, but none tested Jordan as the Dragons held on for the victory, their second straight over the Dukes.
Drexel will try to capture another league win on Wednesday night when the Dragons host Hofstra at 7:00 p.m. It will be Drexel's first home CAA game of the season and will open a three-game homestand for Drexel which will also feature tilts against the College of Charleston and Columbia.
