Harrisonburg, Va. – Kazembe Abif scored a game-high 15 points but Drexel fell to James Madison, 68-45, at the JMU Convocation Center. James Madison remained tied for the top spot in the CAA with a 5-2 league record. The Dukes are 15-5 overall. Drexel lost for the third straight time, all on the road, and is now 2-5 (1-6 CAA).
In what has been a recurring theme, the Dragons struggled from the floor in the first half. Drexel went the final 10:29 without making a field goal as the Dukes closed the half on a 15-2 run. The Dragons were just 5-for-22 in the first half. Kazembe Abif and Terrell Allen each had five points to lead Drexel. On the other end, the Dragons played pretty well, holding the Dukes to just 28 points, but trailed by 10 at intermission.
JMU shot much better in the second half and extended its lead to as many as 23 late in the game. The Dukes were 15-for-30 in the second half. JMU came into the game as one of the top three-point shooting teams in the league, but the Drexel defense held JMU to just four three-pointers in the game. However, the Drexel offense was not able to get on track throught. Abif, who was 5-for-8 from the floor, was the only Dragon who shot the ball well. Terrell Allen added 11 points, while Rodney Williams had nine points and three blocked shots.
Dimitrije Cabarkapa came off the bench to lead the Dukes with 14 points. He made six of his nine shots, including two three-pointers. Ron Curry had 12 points, 10 of them coming in the first half. JMU owned the glass, outrebounding the Dragons by 24. The Dukes had 17 second chance points and 15 offensive rebounds.
Tonight marked the end of a three-game road swing for the Dragons. They return to the Daskalakis Athletic Center where they start a four-game home stand beginning on Saturday evening. Drexel will host UNCW at 6 p.m. Please check drexeldragons.com for any changes in game time due to weather.
