PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's basketball team was held scoreless in overtime as the Dragons fell to Northeastern on Friday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 73-65. Drexel had overcome a four-point deficit late in regulation to grab a late lead, but the Huskies tied the game with 3.6 seconds to play and clamped down on the Dragons in the extra session.
Meghan Creighton scored 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from long range, a season high. She also had six rebounds and five assists. Rachel Pearson netted 14 points, while Sarah Curran added nine. Jackie Schluth scored six and had four blocks, moving her into 10th place all-time in Drexel history in that category.
Drexel trailed by four with just 3:41 to play in the fourth quarter when Creighton sank her fifth three-pointer of the evening, pulling the Dragons back within a point at 57-56. After a Northeastern jumper gave the Huskies a three-point lead, Alexis Smith drained a three from the left wing to even the score with 2:11 remaining. Sarah Curran followed with a bucket underneath to put the Dragons on top.
The lead was three with under 10 seconds to play as Northeastern ran a slow-developing play out of a timeout. With the clock ticking down, the Huskies opted to drive in for two. Jess Genco scored on a runner in the lane and the Dragons were called for a questionable foul that sent Genco to the line for the tying free throw. A last-second heave was no good, and the teams went to overtime, where Northeastern scored the only eight points of the period to win.
The Dragons have lost six straight overtime games dating back to an 80-74 overtime victory over William & Mary on Feb. 17, 2011.
The game was back-and-forth throughout, with neither team holding more than a five-point lead through regulation. The lead changed hands 21 times and was tied eight times. Drexel shot just 31.0 percent (9-for-29) in the first half, hitting just three of 14 attempts from long range. The Dragons righted themselves after intermission, shooting 14-of-22 (63.6 percent) in the second half and going 9-for-13 (69.2 percent) from beyond the arc.
Northeastern stayed close thanks to its tenacity on the offensive glass. Drexel ceded 24 offensive rebounds to the Huskies, who cashed them in for 23 second-chance points. The Dragons pulled down just 23 total rebounds, and managed just four second-chance points.
Pearson's 14 points give her 981 in her Drexel career. She has scored 64 in the past three games, an average of 21.3 points per game. She will have an opportunity to become the 22nd Dragon in program history to reach 1,000 career points when the Dragons return to action on Sunday afternoon at William & Mary, their first road game of the CAA season. That game tips off at 2:00 p.m.
