Field Hockey Drops Friday CAA Battle to William & Mary, 2-1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Drexel field hockey team (6-8, 1-2 CAA) fell to the William & Mary Tribe (6-7, 3-1 CAA) by a final of 2-1 from Williamsburg, Va. on Friday evening.
The Dragons earned the early scoring chances and struck first against the Tribe but could not overcome the deficit after William & Mary took the lead late in the second half.
Senior Idrienne Walker and redshirt junior Alison McCardell grabbed the early chances for Drexel as Walker had her shot saved by a Tribe defender 3:33 into the game. Less than 15 second later, McCardell took a shot that was saved by William & Mary goalkeeper Morgan Moore.
Drexel took an opening lead in the game when freshman Tess Bernheimer notched her fifth of the season 8:04 into the conference affair. Senior Jessica McCarthy added her team-leading eighth assist of the year on the score. The goal came on the first penalty corner opportunity for the Dragons.
The Tribe responded with less than eight minutes to play in the half to even it up at 1-1 when Emma MacLeod scored her third of the season off a pass from Estelle Hughes.
Drexel managed only one more shot in the first half after the early goal by Bernheimer with four total in the first 35 minutes.
William & Mary recorded the game-winning goal 21:06 into the second half with just about 14 minutes to play as MacLeod scored her second of the night on a pass by Cammie Lloyd.
Drexel sophomore goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist made 10 saves on the evening, her third double-digit performance of the year after New Hampshire and UConn early in the campaign.
Bernheimer led the Dragons with three shots followed by Walker and sophomore Megan Wiest with two apiece.
William & Mary led shots, 22-9, and corners, 5-3.
Following the loss to the Tribe, Drexel turns its attention to No. 20 American on Sunday, October 16 in a nonconference tilt as the Dragons return home to Buckley Field for the 2 p.m. start in the squad's annual Play4TheCure game.
