Crew Wins Two Races Saturday on the Schuylkill at the Navy Day Regatta

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Crew completed a successful Saturday on the Schuylkill River at the Navy Day Regatta, highlighted by the men's varsity eight and men's second varsity eight each taking first place.
The Dragons, in their first competition in three weeks, finished fourth or better in each of the five races they entered.
Drexel's men's varsity eight raced to a time of 12:56.38 in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, pacing second-place George Washington and third-place Navy – two ranked crews last year – by nearly seven seconds. The second varsity eight, racing in the Lois Krall boat, took the top time of 13:13.89, besting second-place George Washington by nearly 10 seconds.
Also recording top-four finishes were the women's varsity eight, women's second varsity eight and men's freshmen eight. The women's second varsity eight A grabbed a comfortable second-place finish in the Marlene Buckley II boat with a time of 14:51.74, as Penn led the way with a 14:38.13. The women's second varsity eight B, in the Maria Papadakis, finished third with a 15:22.00. The Dragons' women's varsity eight also had a strong race, taking third in the Cara Fry boat with a time of 14:56.30, which was less than six seconds behind second-place Navy. Drexel began the day with the men's freshmen eight finishing fourth in a field of 18 with a time of 13:26.10 in the Annette Pennoni boat.
Drexel Crew will return to action when it travels to Boston, Mass., for the Head of the Charles Regatta on Oct. 22-23.
