BOSTON, Mass. – Drexel Crew closed out competition at the 52nd annual Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday in Boston, Mass., highlighted by top-10 finishes from both the women's and men's second varsity eights. Heavy rain on Saturday and high winds on Sunday added to the difficultly of an already challenging Charles River
Drexel's women's second varsity eight rowed to a ninth-place finish out of 39 boats in the club eights division. Racing in the Cara Fry, the boat battled through periods of downpours and increasing wind speeds but was able to finish in 17:35.598. Brown took the top spot with a time of 16:50.417.
On Sunday, taking on winds that were forecasted to reach 40-50 mph, the men's second varsity eight, racing in the Lois Krall boat, took home an eighth-place finish in the collegiate eights on the daunting race course. The boat finished in 16:28.090 in a crowded finish that featured the sixth-place Hobart crew and seventh-place MIT crew crossing the finish line all within just over a second of each other. Laga took first with the only sub-16 time in the division with a 15:55.389
Also on Sunday, the Dragons' men's and women's varsity eight boats each recorded 24th-place times. The men's varsity eight, in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, took the Charles River course first and finished in 16:11.911, ahead of two ranked crews from last season in Georgetown and Penn, and just over two seconds behind Cornell. The women's varsity eight, racing in the Cara Fry boat, also finished 24th overall in the championship eights. The Dragons finished in 18:25.871, sandwiched about six seconds behind Dartmouth and six seconds ahead of Boston College.
The Dragons will continue the fall season next weekend with two races, the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta on Saturday, Oct. 29 and the Princeton Chase on Sunday, Oct. 30.
