Crew Earns Five Top-Five Finishes Saturday at Head of the Schuylkill Regatta

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Crew began a busy weekend of competition Saturday with top-five finishes in all five of its races at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.
The Dragons recorded a second-place time in the women's championship eight (varsity eight), second in the women's club eight (second varsity eight), second in the men's freshmen eight, third in the men's club eight and fifth in the men's championship eight.
Drexel's women's varsity eight, racing in the Cara Fry boat, took second with a time of 15:32.570 behind only Penn. The men's varsity eight preceded the women in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat with a fifth overall time – second amongst collegiate boats – crossing the finish line in 13:35.323. Penn took first at 13:20.935 in the race.
Also recording a second-place finish was the women's second varsity eight in the Marlene Buckley II boat with a time of 15:28.761, which was 10 seconds behind Penn's 15:18.750. In the men's race, the Dragons, racing in the Lois Krall boat, took third with a time of 13:52.525, behind only two Penn boats. Drexel's men's freshmen eight, which raced in the Joseph Greipp boat, also took second, finishing the Schuylkill River course in 13:39.444, behind only Princeton.
On Sunday, the Dragons will make the short trip north to Princeton, N.J. for the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie. Action begins at 9 a.m. with the men's varsity eights in still to be determined lineups. The women will race at 9:30 a.m. with the A in the Cara Fry boat, B in the Marlene Buckley II boat and C in the Maria Papadakis boat.
Following this weekend's racing, the Dragons' women will race in the Collegiate Small Boat Challenge on Mercer Lake on Nov. 5-6, while the eights head to Rutgers on Nov. 6.
