Men’s Swimming and Diving Wraps Up Weekend Around Philadelphia

Saturday Results vs. Villanova and La Salle
PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the opening weekend of competition for the 2016-17 season on Saturday after competing in the Philadelphia Relays on Friday.
The men defeated both Villanova and La Salle on Saturday in Villanova, Pa. Drexel won an easy decision over the Wildcats, 200.5-99.5, and edged out the Explorers, 154.5-145.5.
Freshman Stathis Malamas won both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events with respective times of 47.13 and 1:43.39 for the Dragons. Sophomore Luke Hanner placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.13.
Sophomore Joseph Brown took first place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.72 while fellow classmate Patrick Cobb also grabbed first in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:43.20.
Freshman Jason Arthur also won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:53.65. He also finished second in both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes at 51.48 and 1:51.72.
Sophomore Dane Bell placed second in both the distance freestyle events for the Dragons with times of 4:43.29 in the 500-yard freestyle and 9:51.25 in the 1000-yard freestyle.
Drexel and La Salle were evenly matched throughout the Saturday meeting with the victory coming down to the final relay for the Dragons. In the 400-yard freestyle relay to close the event, senior Sean Swartz, senior Ivo Pejovic, Hanner and Malamas came through for Drexel with a time of 3:08.78 for first place to secure the victory.
Freshman Anthony Musciano placed second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 265.90 and 237.65.
The squad now heads down to Baltimore, Md. next weekend to face Loyola and Johns Hopkins on Friday, October 28 and Saturday, October 29.
