Men’s Squash Looks to Continue Success in 2016-17

PHILADELPHIA – After winning the B Division Hoehn Cup to cap off the 2015-16 campaign, the Drexel men's squash team looks to continue its success as the 2016-17 season begins on November 15 at Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster, Pa. on Tuesday evening.
PRESEASON RANKINGS
The Dragons earned the No. 9 spot in the Dunlop Men's College Squash Association preseason team rankings after closing the previous season in the same position. Trinity, Yale, Rochester, St. Lawrence, Harvard, Penn, Columbia and Dartmouth represent the top eight spots in respective order.
2016-17 SCHEDULE
Drexel is currently only scheduled to play six of its 17 matches at home in the Kline & Specter Squash Center in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The squad plays seven of the eight teams in the preseason top 8 national preseason rankings, hosting four of them. The schedule also features six Ivy League opponents in Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn and Yale.
The Dragons begin with Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday followed by their home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 16 against Navy at 5 p.m. This upcoming weekend, Drexel plays Columbia, Trinity and Bowdoin on the road before taking a break during Thanksgiving weekend. After hosting Penn on Wednesday, Nov. 30, the men close out 2016 at Middlebury and Williams on Dec. 2 and 3.
In 2017, Drexel welcomes Harvard on Jan. 13 before traveling to Rochester, Cornell and Hobart and William Smith on Jan. 20, 21 and 22. The Dragons then host Yale and Dartmouth at home on Jan. 27 and 29. The final two road matches come at Princeton on Feb. 8 and George Washington on Feb. 10. For the sixth and final home match, Drexel plays Dickinson on senior day on Feb. 12.
The 2016-17 Men's Team National Championships are scheduled from Feb. 17-19 in Cambridge, Mass. The Individual Championships are set for March 3-5 in Hanover, N.H.
2016-17 ROSTER
Led by head coach John White in his sixth season and assistant coach Kelsey Engman in her fourth year, sophomore Omar El Atmas, a 2015-16 First Team All-American, and junior Atticus Kelly represent two of the top returners for the Dragons. Kelly was named to the 2016 Men's National Championship Team and recently represented the United States in the 2016 Pan American Championships.
Fellow sophomore Bransten Ming also tied El Atmas and Kelly for 17 individual wins last season. Ming went 1-0 from the No. 1, 7-1 from the No. 2, 4-3 from the No. 3 and 3-0 from the No. 4. Senior Michael Thompson set a program record with 18 wins last season and looks to continue in his final year with Drexel.
Junior Luke Willemse, junior Noel Solomon and senior Nat Fry also saw significant action last year and figure to do the same this season.
The 18-player team roster has seven newcomers to the squad including five freshmen, one sophomore and one junior. Mostafa Aboul Makarim, Jeremy Barnes, Ben Mekdeci, Lucas Rousselet and Raphael Shinckar represent the five freshmen. Nathaniel Chan joins the team as a sophomore while junior Joshua Hughes is one of seven upperclassmen.
