No. 9 Men’s Squash Wins 2016-17 Opener at No. 13 Franklin & Marshall

LANCASTER, Pa. – In the 2016-17 season opener, the No. 9 Drexel men's squash team (1-0) defeated the No. 13 Franklin & Marshall Diplomats (0-1) by a final of 9-0 in Lancaster, Pa. on Tuesday evening.

The Dragons earned their first victory of the campaign in sweeping fashion.

Sophomore Bransten Ming played from the No. 1 position for Drexel and after dropping the first game, 6-11, came back to win the next three of four, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5, for the win.

Fellow sophomore Omar El Atmas grabbed a No. 2 spot win over F&M's Silvio Soon, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 11-5.

Three newcomers contributed to the Dragons' win on Tuesday. Freshman Lucas Rousselet played from the No. 3 spot and swept Shams Abbas, 11-6, 11-7, 11-6, for his first collegiate victory. Fellow classmate Mostafa Aboul Makarim earned a No. 7 position victory in four games, 6-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-8. Junior Joshua Hughes won his first match with Drexel, 11-3, 8-11, 11-7, 11-6, over Gavan Hitchenor.

Senior Michael Thompson swept Yannis Senkel, 11-8, 11-5, 11-6, from the No. 4 spot while junior Luke Willemse did the same from the No. 5 position, 11-8, 11-4, 11-8.

Juniors Noel Solomon and Cillian Dunne rounded out the bottom of the ladder for the Dragons. Solomon, in the No. 8, lost his first two games, but came back to win the next three. In the No. 9, Dunne earned a sweep.

The Drexel men will now return to the Kline & Specter Squash Center for their home opener against Navy tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m.
