Denton, Texas – Drexel sank 12 three-pointers and had five players score in double figures in an 83-62 win at North Texas on Sunday. The win was the second straight for the Dragons as they improved to 2-2 on the young season. North Texas fell to 1-2.
Drexel played an inspired game at both ends of the court. The Dragons nailed six three-pointers in the first half on its way to a 40-21 lead. Freshman Kari Jonsson led the barrage, draining four of his five long-range attempts. Kurk Lee also knocked down a pair as Drexel erased an early 9-6 deficit to take control heading to intermission. The Dragons played well on defense as well, holding the Mean Green to just 27 percent shooting.
The second half was more of the same as Drexel's offense shot 60 percent over the final 20 minutes. North Texas tried to make a run, cutting the lead to 15 at one point, but Drexel answered with good possessions and made seven of its nine attempts from the line in the half.
Rodney Williams scored 20 points for the Dragons, marking the third straight game the senior had at least 20. He also handed out five assists and grabbed six rebounds. Jonsson finished with 15 points and sank five three-pointers, both career-highs. Austin Williams had his second straight impressive game. The junior was 6-for-6 from the floor, scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Lee added 12 and Sammy Mojica just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Dragons shot a blistering 12-for-24 from long range and 54 percent overall from the floor. They also outrebounded the Mean Green by 10. Drexel has a quick turnaround this week. After flying back to Philadelphia, the Dragons will be back on the road at Niagara on Wednesday night.
