Niagara University, N.Y. – Niagara shot a blistering 83 percent from long range on its way to a 93-74 victory against Drexel on Wednesday night at the Gallagher Center. The loss snapped Drexel's two-game losing streak and dropped its record to 2-3. Niagara (1-4) got in the win column for the first time this season.
Niagara shot 59 percent in the first half but led by just one point at intermission. The Dragons trailed the entire first half, but still remained in the game as they committed just two first half turnovers, grabbed nine offensive boards and scored 12 second half points. However, the Purple Eagles opened the second half on fire. They went on an 11-2 run to open up a 10-point lead. Drexel narrowed that to six on a pair of Sammy Mojica buckets, but the Purple Eagles answered with a 9-2 run and the Dragons were unable to get any closer than 10 points the rest of the way. Overall, Niagara shot 62 percent from the floor and 65 percent in the final 20 minutes.
Austin Williams was again one of the bright spots for Drexel. The junior scored a career-high 16 points and was 7-for-8 from the line. He has now made 15 of his last 16 shots. Mojica led the team with 17 points and Rodney Williams added 13. Kurk Lee handed out a career-high seven assists and scored 10 points in a losing cause.
Marvin Prochet led four Purple Eagles in double figures with 21 points. He was 3-for-4 from deep. Kahlil Dukes added 19, while James Towns (17) and Matt Scott (15) also reached double digits. Towns was 5-for-6 from deep and Niagara finished the night 10-for-12 from behind the arc. The 83 percent shooting from long-range was the highest a Drexel opponent has ever recorded against the Dragons.
The Dragons return home and will be off until Sunday. Drexel will host La Salle on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
