PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's basketball team dropped its first of three games against city opponents Sunday evening at the Daskalakis Athletic Center to the La Salle Explorers, 89-78.
La Salle (2-2) took advantage of a Drexel (2-4) perimeter defense that is looking to find its stride as the Explorers hit on 13 of 21 (62 percent) three-point attempts. La Salle's Cleon Roberts hit on 6 of 7 shots from deep, and led five Explorers in double figures with 22 points.
The Explorers came out firing from the onset, quickly building a lead in the first half. The Dragons caught up to La Salle's pace and cut the deficit to one after Kari Jonsson came off the bench and hit a three four and a half minutes in. However, from the 15:27 mark to the 6:56 mark, the Explorers outscored the Dragons 25-6. Drexel was unable to get the La Salle lead below 13 the rest of the half and went into the locker room at halftime down 44-27.
After La Salle grew its lead to 68-45 at the 12:27 mark of the second, Drexel slowly chipped away. Freshman point guard Kurk Lee helped ignite a 12-0 Dragons run over the next three minutes, scoring eight of Drexel's dozen in that span to cut the La Salle lead to 11. Lee led the Dragons with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting and five assists. Jordan Price, who had 20 points for the Explorers, hit a three to snap the run at the 9:30 mark, and La Salle went on to build the lead back up to 19 points. Price shot an efficient 8 for 12 from the floor as the Explorers went on to shoot better than 54 percent compared to Drexel's 43 percent. Joining Roberts and Price in double figures were Amar Stukes with 14 points and Pookie Powell and B.J. Johnson each with a dozen.
To Drexel's credit, it battled down the stretch despite being without big man Rodney Williams, who was limited to 19 minutes with foul trouble. It shot 53 percent from field and 63.6 percent from deep in the second frame. The Dragons closed the game outscoring the Explorers 14-6 over the final five and a half minutes, chipping into the La Salle lead but ultimately falling, 89-78.
Sammy Mojica again closed in on a double-double for head coach Zach Spiker, chipping in with 15 points and leading the team with eight rebounds. The Explorers held a 36-30 advantage on the boards as a team. Miles Overton added 11 points on 2-for-11 shooting. The Dragons forced 19 La Salle turnovers, but turned the ball over 17 times themselves.
The Dragons will travel to Lafayette for an 8 p.m. start on Wednesday before heading to High Point for a Saturday night matchup.
