PHILADELPHIA -- The Drexel men's basketball team jumped on Kean from the opening tip Sunday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center and came away with the 40-point victory, 84-44.
Drexel opened the game on a 22-2 run over the first 9:56 to stifle any chances Kean, a Division III opponent, may have had at finding momentum. The Dragons struck early and often from deep during their opening run, getting three-pointers from four different players in that span. Overall for the game, the Dragons knocked down a dozen triples from seven different players, led by Kari Jonsson, who had three. Drexel would stretch the lead to as many as 26 with 2:24 to go in the half on an Austin Williams slam off the feed from Sammy Mojica. Williams finished the game with his first career double-double with 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Mojica would also finish with 16 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists.
The Dragons again came out swinging in the second half, further pushing the game out of reach for Kean by going on a 13-2 run to extend the lead to 55-22 just over four minutes in. Kean, for its part, would never stop fighting, eventually chipping the Drexel lead under 30 with 11:15 to play. Drexel, however, would not allow Kean to get any closer, stretching the lead to 40 points for the 84-44 victory.
With the extra cushion, head coach Zach Spiker was able to utilize guys who typically play much smaller roles. Major Canady came off the bench for his first minutes – and hit a free throw for his first points – since March 8, 2014, after battling season-ending injuries the last two years. Jeremy Peck notched his first career double figure rebounding game, closing out the contest with 10 rebounds and six points. Kris Alford played 15 minutes and hit his first career three, while Elgin Ford, Jr. knocked down his first career three-point attempt. Andrew Cartwright hit a three for the first points of his sophomore campaign. Sam Green played 20 minutes and scored a career-high eight points.
As a team, Drexel held a 54-27 advantage on the boards. It assisted on 24 of 32 made shots, led by Kurk Lee's career-high 10 assists. The win was the Dragons' first 40-point win since Dec. 28, 2010, when they beat Niagara by 45 points. Kean's Mike Summerer recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Dragons (5-6) will hit the road for Hamden, Conn. on Wednesday for a matchup against Quinnipiac at 7 p.m.
