WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- For the second straight season, the Drexel men's basketball team went down to Virginia and spoiled William & Mary's Senior Day with a 74-69 victory Saturday over the Tribe.
The win was head coach Bruiser Flint's 150th career regular-season win in Colonial Athletic Association play. He joins former George Mason coach Jim Larranaga as the only coaches to reach the achievement.
The Tribe battled back after the Dragons extended the lead to as many as 10 points with about five minutes to play. With the Dragons leading by six, Terry Tarpey hit a three with 18 seconds to play to cut the Drexel lead to just a bucket. Then after Rashann London hit one of two from the line with 11.8 seconds remaining to make it a 71-67 lead, Terrell Allen fouled David Cohn before the ball could be inbounded. Cohn hit both from the line to make it a two-point game before Allen was then fouled by Omar Prewitt again before the ball could be inbounded. Allen, who scored 16 of his career-high 20 points in the second half, made one of two to extend the lead back to three. William & Mary would miss a three out of a timeout, then Tavon Allen sealed the 74-69 win by hitting two from the stripe to snap Drexel's 11-game losing streak. Tavon Allen finished with 15 points, five rebounds and four rebounds.
Down 43-41 with 12:51 to play, the Dragons went on a 16-4 run, capped by a Tavon Allen three-pointer just over seven minutes later to take a 57-47 lead. Drexel held a nine-point lead with 1:42 to play after Rodney Williams hit a layup for two of his 16 points. William & Mary would not go away, though, relying heavily on Prewitt, who would finish with a game-high 29 points. Prewitt converted on an and-one before point guard David Cohn knocked down a three to cut the Drexel lead to 65-62. The Dragons would then capitalize from the free throw line to keep the Tribe at arm's length, going 9-for-12 over the final 1:01 of play. Drexel went 20-for-25 in the game from the stripe, compared to William & Mary, which shot just 11-for-22. Terrell Allen went 8-for-9 from the line, while Prewitt was just 5-for-11 for William & Mary.
In the first half, William & Mary jumped on the Dragons from the tip, starting the game on an 8-0 run over the first three minutes. The Dragons, however, countered with a 13-3 run over a five-minute span to build a 30-23 lead, which began with a London three followed by a Mojica four-point play on back-to-back possessions. The Tribe fought right back, closing out the half on a 7-0 burst, holding Drexel scoreless over the final 2:53 to go into halftime tied 30-30.
The Dragons were able to match the Tribe on the glass in large part because of Kazembe Abif. The senior recorded his seventh career double-double with `12 points and 12 rebounds. Sammy Mojica grabbed seven rebounds of his own. Tarpey led William & Mary with 13, while Prewitt added seven.
Drexel was also able to close out on William & Mary's three-point shooters and limit them from deep. The Tribe was held to 6-for-21 shooting from beyond the arc, as Prewitt was its only player to hit two. Drexel countered by going 8-for-13 from deep. Drexel assisted on 16 of 21 made baskets and only turned the ball over six times.
Drexel (4-23, 2-14 CAA) returns home to Philadelphia to close out the regular season with games Thursday against Delaware and Saturday against Northeastern.
