NEWARK, N.J. – Coming off of a pair of wins, Drexel Tennis' men fell, 7-0, while the women's team beat NJIT, 5-2, Sunday afternoon on the road.
The Dragons' men drop to 8-4 overall, while the women improve to 9-2 on the year.
Drexel's men had a tough time handling the Highlanders. Sinan Orhon and Kashyap Ashok earned a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, but the Dragons could not pull through at Nos. 1 and 3. In singles play, Drexel put up a fight, but it would not be enough. Orhon and Vuk Subotic forced three sets at Nos. 5 and 6, each winning the second before ultimately falling.
With Honami Yazawa returning to the lineup after battling an injury over the past couple weeks, the Dragons' women jumped out to a quick start by winning the doubles point. Yazawa and Clary Rodriguez Cruz as well as the dominant pairing of Kendra Bunch and Lea Winkler picked up 6-4 wins at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Erin Bowsher and Ryshena Providence completed the sweep of doubles play with a 6-2 win at No. 3.
In singles play, the Dragons made up for losses in the top two ladder positions with wins in the next four. Bowsher grabbed a straight-set 6-0, 7-6 (3) win over Ines Vujkovac at No. 3 followed by Winkler's 6-3, 6-3 victory against Alba Rosas Garcia at No. 4. Bunch and Providence then finished off Sunday's victory with wins at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Bunch beat Amanda Helminsky, 6-4, 6-3, while Providence finished off Natalija Tasovac, 6-0, 7-5.
The Dragons will return to action on Saturday, March 5 when they travel to Jersey City, N.J. to take on St. Peter's in their final match before spring break.
