Women's Tennis Battles Friday in 4-1 Loss to Elon in CAA Quarterfinals

ELON, N.C. – The Drexel women's tennis team's season came to an end Friday afternoon in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships quarterfinals after a 4-1 loss to No. 2 Elon. The match was played at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center because of rain.

Drexel, the seventh seed in the tournament, finishes its season with a 13-7 overall after falling to tournament host. The Dragons did not go out without a fight, however, earning a win at third singles and forcing three sets in three of the six matches.

Kendra Bunch earned the Dragons' lone match win, beating Natalia Janowicz after coming back from dropping the third set by a score of, 3-6 6-4, 6-1. At No. 6, Fiorella Coria, who had a strong second half to the spring season, took Taylor Casey the distance after winning the first set but dropping the next two, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Honami Yazawa also went three sets, doing so against Olivia Lucas. The match between the Dragons' All-CAA second teamer and the Phoenix's All-CAA first teamer ultimately went unfinished with Yazawa ahead in the final frame.

The Dragons would also get strong matches from Ryshena Providence and Lea Winkler at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Providence would battle Suzanne Zenoni in a 7-5, 6-3 loss, while Winkler dropped her match to Kristen Ward, 6-4, 6-2. Clary Rodriguez Cruz also fell, losing, 6-1, 6-1, to All-CAA first teamer Erica Braschi.

Drexel's men's team also bowed out in the quarterfinals of the CAA Championships, falling to William & Mary, 4-0. Click here for more.
