SOUTHPORT, N.C. – The Drexel golf team finished the 2016 season by finishing fifth at the CAA Championships. The Dragons shot a 303 in the final round and finished at 899. The tournament took place at Founders Club Course at Saint James Plantations. Senior Chris Crawford placed third overall at two-under-par and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Crawford, in perhaps his final outing wearing the Blue and Gold, was in the hunt for medalist honors all afternoon. At one point, the Bensalem, Pa. native made birdie on four of five holes and was five-under-par. However, he was unable to defeat William Rainey, who finished as the Most Outstanding Golfer with a five-under-par 211. James Madison's Ryan Cole edged Crawford by just one shot for second place. Entering the tournament, Cole was ranked 46th in the country by Golfstat, whle Rainey was 84th. If this was Crawford's last event, he finished as well as a Dragon ever has. In his final four tournaments, he was a medalist twice, had one second-place finish and ended today third overall. His two-under-par performance was the best finish ever at the CAA Championships for a Drexel golfer. In his illustrious career, Crawford was an eight-time medalist and won 11 CAA Player of the Week honors, both records at the University.
Crawford was the only Dragon to duplicate his success from Saturday. Aaron Fricke shot a four-over-par 76 on Sunday, while Yoseph Dance managed a 77. Brian Fischer chipped in with a 79. Dance's three-day total of 226 tied him for 14th overall. Crawford and Dance were the only Dragons to finish in the top 20 individually.
Charleston won the tournament with an 869, which was 22 shots better than James Madison. Elon UNCW and Elon finished third and fourth respectively. Joining Crawford on the All-Tournament Team were Rainey and Patrick Derby from the College of Charleston, Cole, Thomas Eldridge of UNCW and Jonathan DiIanni of Elon.
