PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Crew won its fourth consecutive overall team championship Saturday at the 78th annual Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River. The Dragons won two gold medals and five silver medals en route to the title.
Drexel has now won the overall points title in each of the last four seasons, dating back to 2013. The Dragons won gold medals in the men's second varsity eight and men's freshmen eight competitions. They also took home silvers in the men's varsity eight, women's varsity eight, women's second varsity eight, women's varsity four and men's third varsity eight. The program has now won a total of 55 medals, 33 of which have come under the guidance of Director of Rowing Paul Savell, who took over in 2007.
The Dragons also set program records by sending 11 boats to grand finals, recording top-five finishes in 11 grand finals and sending all 14 boats to Day 2 of competition.
With the schedule flipped and condensed in anticipation for an expected storm, the varsity eights were the first to race in the grand finals. The men came out in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat in what was expected to be a tight race for the gold and did not disappoint. The Dragons took the silver with a time of 5:58.419, falling just three seconds off of Florida Tech's pace. Drexel's men set the stage for the women, who had found their stride of late, in the Cara Fry boat to also take the silver with a time of 6:59.524, about five seconds behind UMass. The silver medal ties the women's varsity eight's best finish at Dad Vail.
The Dragons did not stop there as the eights of both the men's and women's crews continued to dominate the Schuylkill. Drexel's men's second varsity eight, racing in the Lois Krall boat, took home the Dad Vail gold for the third year in a row, holding off Florida Tech by 0.65 seconds to win with a time of 6:29.576. With the win, senior five-seat Dave Hanrahan finished off his collegiate career winning Dad Vail gold all four years he competed. Also taking home a gold medal was the dominant men's freshmen eight in the Joseph Greipp boat. Coming into Dad Vails with a season's worth of momentum behind it, the freshmen eight rode the wave to the gold medal with a winning time of 6:45.411. The victory marks the second year in a row the men's freshmen eight has won the gold.
Drexel's success did not stop there, though. The women's second varsity eight found its stroke, all the way to a silver medal. In the Marlene Buckley II boat, the Dragons women came back in the final 200 meters to pass Fordham for second with a time of 7:36.870, besting the Rams by 0.32 seconds. UMass took the gold with a time of 7:26.063. However, it was not just the Drexel eights that came away with a medal. The women's varsity four, which has rowed an impressive spring season in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat, took the silver medal back to University City with a time of 8:05.199 to finish behind UMass.
Not to be overshadowed by medal winners, the Dragons had an impressive showing across the board of boats that helped contribute to the Dad Vail title. The men's varsity four finished in fourth place in the LeBow College of Business boat with a time of 7:13.384, holding off a charging MSOE. The women's freshmen eight, racing in the Maria Papadakis boat, also grabbed a fourth-place finish with a time of 7:51.499 after Army set a winning pace of 7:33.007. The women's single, rowed by Samantha Dorman, took fourth in the final with a time of 10:11.661, as Queen's took first as the only boat to go sub-10. Finally, the men's pair, rowing in the Toby Wallace boat, took fifth place to earn the Dragons' 11th top-five finish of Dad Vails, crossed the finish line with a time of 8:26.379 after a tight race with St. Thomas for fourth.
The Dragons advanced all 14 of the boats they entered into competition to Saturday's action. The men's freshmen four, which raced in the Oxholm boat, finished fourth in its semifinal with a time of 7:16.742, missing out on advancing by 8.5 seconds. The women's pair, racing in the MacDonald boat, followed a strong Friday heat with a time of 8:33.927 to finish just over 15 seconds out of advancing to a final. The men's single, rowed by Ryan Gasparini, rowed a strong time of 7:57.346, but missed second by just over four seconds.
Drexel's women's crew will face a quick turnaround and close out the most important weekend of its season, travelling to Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships on Sunday for a chance at a spot at the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif. Drexel's men will have some time off from competition before closing out their season at the IRA National Championships on June 3-5.
