PHILADELPHIA -- The Drexel men's basketball team pulled away from Delaware late in the first half Saturday for the Dragons' first conference win of the season at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 76-60.
The Dragons (7-11, 1-4 CAA) went on a 22-5 run from the 3:24 mark of the first half to the 17:31 mark of the second half, turning a two-point lead into an 11-point halftime lead before extending the lead to 19 points. After the opening four and a half minutes of the game, Drexel did not trail the rest of the way.
Closing out the first half, Drexel struck from deep, getting three pointers from Sammy Mojica and Miles Overton. Mojica finished the game one point shy of what would have been the first Drexel triple-double in 15 years, closing out with nine points, a career-high 15 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists. Overton struck three times from deep and finished with 13 points. To start the second half, though, the Dragons got the ball into the middle and let Rodney Williams and Austin Williams go to work. The two Williamses hit the first four shots of the half before Delaware (7-12, 0-6 CAA) called a timeout at 17:28 to regroup. Rodney Williams finished the night with 15 points, four rebounds, a block and a steal, while Austin Williams fouled with 14 points and five rebounds.
Until Drexel's run at the end of the first, the game was tight with the Dragons unable to extend their lead beyond half a dozen. Delaware's Anthony Mosley took a steal the other way for a fast-break layup to make it 25-23 with 3:24 left in the half; however, after Mosley's bucket, the Blue Hens could only manage one field goal over the next nearly eight and a half minutes. Mosley led Delaware with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Drexel capitalized on the Delaware lull extending a lead out to 19 points, the largest of the game, to take command of the game with 16 minutes to play.
Despite a slow start shooting, Drexel shot 43.3 percent on the night (26 of 60), and held Delaware to 33.9 percent (20 of 59) from the field and 19.2 percent from deep (5 of 26). Drexel also held the rebounding advantage, 39-36, over a Delaware team that came in with a plus-3 rebounding margin on the year. The Dragons would also get double-figure scoring from Kurk Lee, who finished with a dozen to go along with six assists and two steals. Ryan Daly was the only other Blue Hen in double digits, narrowly missing a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Drexel hits the road for North Carolina next week for a Thursday night matchup at Elon before a rematch Saturday afternoon with UNCW.
