1/19/2017 8:43:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Elon, N.C. - Drexel made a season-high 13 three-pointers, including five by John Moran, but lost the first game of its two-game trip at Elon, 93-73. Moran scored a career-best 15 points in the game, but the Dragons fell behind early and couldn't catch the Phoenix (11-9, 3-4 CAA). The Dragons fell to 7-12 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Elon scored the first nine points of the game and raced out to an early 11-2 lead. The Dragons quickly responded and when Moran hit his first three-pointer, Drexel trimmed the lead to one at 12-11. The momentum swung yet again minutes later as the Phoenix scored 11-straight points to open up a 23-11 lead. The rest of the half the teams played just about even as Elon went to the locker room ahead by two at 42-32.
The second half started similar to the first. The Phoenix scored seven points over the first minute and a half to take a commanding 17-point lead. The Dragons cut the deficit to 12 on a pair of Kirk Lee free throws with 6:23 to play, but that was as close as it would get. Elon's three-point shooting was held in check most of the game, but the Phoenix sank three in the final three minutes of the contest.
Moran was 5-for-7 from deep in 22 minutes off the bench. Lee also had 15 points as he sank seven of his eight free throw attempts. Miles Overton added 13 points and was 6-for-6 from the line. The Dragons were 13-for-29 from behind the arc and had seven players make at least one.
Tyler Seibring led a balanced scoring attack for Elon with 25 points. He nailed four three-pointers, had seven rebounds and six assists. All five Phoenix starters scored at least 12 points. Steve Santa Ana chipped in with 22 points, while Dainan Swoope had 16 points. The Phoenix shot 48 percent overall and made 10 of its 22 long-range attempts. Elon kept the Dragons at bay in the second half as it sank its first 17 freebies to start the half. Elon's only miss from the line in the second half came in the closing seconds.
The Dragons will bus over to Wilmington, N.C. after the game. They will face UNCW on Saturday afternoon at Trask Arena. The game will tip-off at 4 p.m. and can be seen on The Comcast Network.
