BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Drexel wrestling team fell to Binghamton in dual action on Friday night, 22-12. The Dragons held the lead through six matches, but the Bearcats would take wins in the final four matchups and go on to secure the victory.
The dual began with the heavyweight match, where Joey Goodhart earned a 6-2 decision over Binghamton's Connor Calkins to put the Dragons on the board. Tanner Shoap followed at 125 with a 4-2 win over Steven Bulzomi. At 133, Zack Fuentes stepped in and picked up an overtime victory over the Bearcats Ian Lupole to give Drexel an early 9-0 advantage.
Dylan Caruana recorded the Bearcats' first points of the night with a win over David Pearce at 141. No. 17 Matthew Cimato came back and edged Binghamton's Parker Kropman, 5-4 at 149, putting Drexel ahead, 12-3. However, the Bearcats' Tristan Rifanburg and Jake Einbinder combined for two consecutive technical falls at 157 and 165 respectively to quickly put Binghamton ahead, 13-12. Anthony DePrez extended the Bearcats' lead with a 3-1 win in a close match with Ebed Jarrell at 174 and then No. 11 Steve Schneider followed with a 10-3 victory over Alex DeCiantis at 184 to put the Bearcats up, 19-12. Mark Tracy took an 8-3 decision over Joshua Murphy in the last match of the night to secure a 22-12 victory for Binghamton.
With the loss, the Dragons move to 7-5 overall and 4-3 against conference opponents, while the Bearcats improve to 5-3, 5-1 EIWA. This marks the Dragons' first loss of the season that has not come at the hands of a nationally-ranked opponent.
