PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's basketball team turned their Homecoming game into a party on Sunday afternoon as the Dragons led by double digits nearly the entire afternoon in defeating Northeastern, 74-51. An early 16-0 run left the Dragons firmly in command and they never looked back, finishing off the season sweep of the Huskies with their best shooting performance of the season.
The Dragons (15-5, 6-3) shot 54.7 percent from the floor as a team, their best showing of the year. Sarah Curran led the way offensively for Drexel, scoring 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting to go along with eight rebounds. The 24 points were her most since a 29-point game against George Mason at the FIU Holiday Classic on Dec. 27, and the eight boards were a season high. Jessica Pellechio scored 18 on 7-of-10 shooting, hitting four of her seven attempts from long range. She moved into sole possession of 10th place on Drexel's all-time list with 113 three-pointers in her two seasons on the court with the Dragons. Bailey Greenberg scored 10, going 5-for-8 from the floor for her third-consecutive double-digit output.
Meghan Creighton dished out a season-high nine assists to lead the team, which helped on 22 of 29 made field goals. She added six points. Aubree Brown, making her first collegiate start, also netted six to go along with career bests in assists (six) and steals (four). Tereza Kracikova chipped in four points, while Niki Metzel, Megan Marecic and Sara Woods each scored a pair. Woods had six rebounds and two steals as well.
The Dragons wasted little time seizing control. After spotting the Huskies the first two points of the game, Drexel rattled off 16 in a row, prompting a pair of Northeastern timeouts in the first five minutes of the game. The run ultimately extended to 19-1 before the Huskies finally hit their second field goal of the first quarter with 30 seconds to play in the period.
In all, Drexel held Northeastern without a field goal for a span of 9:08. During that time, Bailey Greenberg and Jessica Pellechio scored six points each and Sarah Curran added five.
Curran broke out in the second quarter, scoring 10 more points before intermission. She was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and 6-for-9 from the floor overall. Greenberg added four more second-quarter points, finishing the first half hitting five of her six attempts.
Drexel led by as many as 19 before a 7-0 Northeastern run midway through the second quarter cut the lead to 12. That was ended when Meghan Creighton found Greenberg for a foul line jumper, one of Creighton's four first-half assists. Aubree Brown netted four points with three of Drexel's seven steals before halftime.
The Dragons were 15-for-25 from the floor in the first half and kept up the torrid pace to start the second. Their first four field goal attempts were successful in the third quarter as Pellechio and Creighton knocked down treys and Brown and Curran followed with lay-ups. That 10-0 run pushed what had been a 14-point halftime lead up to 24, and the Dragons led by more than 20 the rest of the way.
The win improved the Dragons' record to 15-5 on the season. It marked the first time they won 15 of their first 20 games since the 1986-87 season. That year, they improved to 17-5 before finishing with a 20-7 mark.
Drexel will now get back on the road for its next two games, visiting the College of Charleston and Delaware next weekend. The road trip begins on Friday night when Drexel takes on the Cougars in search of another season sweep at 6:30 p.m.
