PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel rowing team recorded top-five finishes in all six categories in which it raced Saturday at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
The Dragons' men's varsity eight, women's second varsity eight A and women's freshmen eight each recorded second-place times in the time trial-style race. The men's second varsity eight A and men's freshmen eight A each took third in their respective categories, while the women's varsity eight finished in fourth.
Racing in the Lois Krall II boat, the men's varsity eight took second with a time of 12:11.66, less than two seconds behind Navy's top eight. The women's second varsity eight, which raced in the Marlene Buckley II boat, finished in a time of 14:22.71 in a race paced comfortably by Penn's top 2V. Drexel's women's freshmen eight boat, which recorded a second-place time of its own in the Marlene Buckley boat, finished with a sub-15-minute time of 14:57.76 to finish less than five seconds off of Navy A's pace.
The men's second varsity eight A, racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, crossed the finish line with a third place time of 12:34.91 less than two seconds off second-place Navy A's time. Navy B edged Navy A by .28 seconds in that one. The men's freshmen eight A, which took to the Schuylkill waters in the Joseph Greipp boat, took third with a 13:02.80 time, behind Pann and Navy Lightweight A. Drexel's women's varsity eight, which raced in the Cara Fry boat, took fourth with a final time of 14:13.75, 30 seconds off Penn A's winning time.
Next up, the Dragons will be sending a few eights up to Boston to compete in the 53rd annual Head of the Charles Regatta on Oct. 21-22.
