HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Drexel field hockey team closed out the 2017 season in victorious fashion with a 2-0 shutout win at Hofstra on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons close the year with a 7-12 (2-4 CAA) record, while Hofstra finishes at 7-12 (1-5 CAA).
Drexel challenged the Pride early and often, firing a total of 19 shots in the game. Goalkeeper Carys Swan and the Hofstra defense weathered the storm at first, but the Dragons broke through in the 26th minute to open a 1-0 lead. Drexel then added a penalty stroke score just 109 seconds into the second half to extend the lead to 2-0. Hofstra challenged late with a flurry of shots, but the score would stand in the Drexel win.
The Dragons pushed the pace early and controlled the possession. They would break through in the 26th minute when freshman Chandler McFeeley centered a pass to Megan Wiest, whose shot deflected high off a Hofstra stick and past Swan for the early score. The Dragons outshot the Pride 11-1 in the opening half and went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
Drexel came out of the break and quickly earned a penalty shot. Katie Bagdon lined up the shot and knocked it past Swan just 109 seconds into the second half to give the Dragons a 2-0 cushion. After keeping the charging Drexel offense at bay over the next six minutes, Hofstra settled in and started to find its chances. The Pride, however, was stopped by Erin Gilchrist, who had a remarkable junior season despite a high volume of shots faced. Isis Cornelissen also came up with a defensive save of her own to keep Hofstra off the board, as the Dragons went on to the 2-0 victory.
Drexel outshot the Pride, 19-12, including 8-5 in shots on goal. Gilchrist made four saves to preserve the shutout, while Swan made six saves. Hofstra did have more penalty corner chances, 8-6.
