Women's Soccer Nets 2-0 Win at Delaware
10/5/2017 9:20:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NEWARK, Del. – The Drexel women's soccer team notched a pair of big milestones on Thursday night. The Dragons made the short drive down I-95 to Delaware and beat the Blue Hens 2-0 for the program's first-ever victory in Newark. The win gave the Dragons 10 points in Colonial Athletic Association play this season, leaving them in a tie for second place.
It was an evenly-played game, with the Dragons outshooting Delaware 9-8. Christiana Ogunsami came up with three saves in putting up her sixth clean sheet of the season and 15th of her Drexel career.
The two teams battled back and forth in a balanced first half, with Delaware actually getting the game's only scoring chances early on. Ogunsami was called upon to make her first save of the night in the 29th minute, then added another four minutes later.
The Dragons didn't put their first shot on goal until the 43rd minute, but they made it count. With 2:33 to play before halftime, Vanessa Kara sent a corner kick into the box, where her feed found the head of Madison Dunn. The senior finished it for her third goal of the year, giving Drexel a 1-0 lead.
Ogunsami needed another stop early in the second half, but after her save in the 48th minute, the Blue Hens were unable to test her the rest of the night. Meanwhile, the Dragons kept the pressure on offensively, and got the insurance goal they were looking for with 7:10 remaining. Wilhelmina Hauch-Fausbøll sent it into the box, where Imani Walker gained control in close. She converted for her first goal, beating Delaware goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos for her first score since her sophomore campaign in 2015.
The win was just the third in program history for Drexel against the Blue Hens, and the first since a regular season-ending 1-0 win in 2012.
With that win in hand, the Dragons will continue their two-game road trip on Sunday afternoon when they visit UNCW. That game is set to kick off at 1 p.m.
