PHILADELPHIA -- The Drexel men's basketball team could not overcome a 19-0 second-half Bowling Green run in its season-opener Friday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 78-69.
In front of a sellout crowd at the DAC, the Dragons jumped out to a 10-point halftime lead thanks in large part to Austin Williams, who score 16 of his career-high 18 points before the break. After the half, however, the Dragons' already thin bench was stretched even thinner as the foul trouble piled up. The Falcons capitalized with a 19-0 run over the course of nearly seven minutes to turn a 10-point Drexel advantage into a nine-point deficit. The Dragons would chip it back down to four, but they ultimately could not overcome the run in the end.
Both teams came out with high energy and played back and forth for much for the first half. Williams shined for the Dragons, showing off a range of moves on the low block and crashing the offensive glass. Late in the half, Drexel made its move. After a Daeqwon Plowden jumper cut the Drexel lead to one, the Dragons went on to finish out the final 4:41 of the first half on a 14-5 burst, capped by a tip-in at the buzzer by Sam Green, to take a 42-32 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Bowling Green quickly cut the Drexel lead to four. After back-to-back threes from Sammy Mojica and Tadas Kararinas brought the Drexel lead back up to 10, 52-42, the Falcons made their move, led by Justin Turner. From the 15:58 mark to the 9:01 mark, Bowling Green reeled off a 19-0 run to flip the scoreboard to a 61-52 lead. Turner heated up and scored 19 of his 33 points in the second half, shooting 12-for-19 overall from the floor. He also recorded seven assists on the night to contribute to nearly two-thirds of all Bowling Green's scoring. The Dragons were able to cut the deficit back down to four with 53 seconds left, but that would be as close as they would get, ultimately falling 78-69.
Williams led the Dragons with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his third career double-double. Mojica added 17 points and seven rebounds of his own. Bowling Green's Turner led all scorers with 33 points on 12-of-19 shooting and added seven assists. Damajeo Wiggins added 14 points and eight rebounds. The Falcons shot 60 percent in the second half and 48 percent overall for the game, while the Dragons shot 41.1 percent overall and only 32.1 percent after the break.
The Dragons return to action at the DAC on Monday when they host Arcadia at 7 p.m.
