BRACKETS AFTER DAY ONE
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Redshirt senior Matthew Cimato advanced to day two of the 2017 NCAA Championships after going 1-1 on the first day of competition. Cimato will compete in the second consolation round of 16 when sessions resume on Friday morning. Kevin Devoy Jr., Alex DeCiantis, and Joey Goodhart each bowed out of competition at the national tournament after suffering two losses on Thursday.
Cimato was forced into the consolation rounds at 149 after being edged by No. 7 Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa, 5-3 in his opening match on Thursday morning. In the Thursday night session, however, he received a medical forfeit from Michigan's Zac Hall and will now take on No. 9 Justin Oliver of Central Michigan when session three begins on Friday morning at 11 a.m. CST.
Devoy had a tough outing after trying to fight through injury and ultimately fell to Cam Sykora of North Dakota State by a major decision in his first match of the tournament at 133. He was unable continue and would be forced to medical forfeit to Edinboro's Korbin Myers and bow out of competition in the last NCAA Championships appearance of his career.
DeCiantis dropped his first match of Thursday's competition at 184 to No. 9 Nathan Jackson of Indiana by a 13-4 major decision. He tried to make a comeback in the wrestleback rounds, but ultimately was edged by Northern Colorado's Dylan Gabel, 5-3 to conclude his first career appearance at the national tournament.
Goodhart's first match of the NCAA Championships in the heavyweight bracket came down to the wire. He wrestled No. 10 Nathan Butler of Stanford to the second round of tiebreakers, in a bout that greatly mirrored their regular season match-up. When time expired in the overtime periods and the two wrestlers were still tied at 3-3, Butler was awarded the win for holding about four seconds of riding time. Moving to the consolation rounds, Goodhart took on Utah Valley's Dustin Dennison and despite keeping him close throughout the match, ultimately fell to Dennison by a 9-3 decision to wrap up competition at this year's tournament.
Cimato will be the lone Dragon advancing to the second day of competition. He will compete in the Session Three consolations, which will begin at 11 a.m. CST/noon EST on Friday.
