PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Rowing sent 10 boats to grand finals Friday to begin its pursuit of a fifth consecutive overall team title at the 79th annual Dad Vail Regatta presented by Independence Blue Cross and the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University on the Schuylkill River. Under the revised schedule, Friday featured time trials, heats and semifinals, and racing will conclude Saturday with the finals inverted to begin with the varsity eights in order to beat the impending storm.
The women's varsity eight is looking to improve on its 2016 silver medal with the program's first-ever gold medal from the top women's boat. It has had a strong season to this point, helping the women's crew to the points title at the George Washington Invitational as well as winning the Kerr and Kelly Cups. Racing in the Cara Fry boat, the women's varsity eight advanced to Saturday morning's grand final at 7:05 a.m. with a first-place time of 6:44.992 in its semifinal.
Drexel's top men's eight is looking to improve upon last season's silver medal and regain the gold for the first time since winning in 2013. The boat had a signature win at the Kerr Cup Regatta, winning the Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup for the seventh straight year. Racing in the Lois Krall II boat, the men's varsity eight advanced to Saturday morning's grand final at 7:15 a.m. with a first-place time of 5:52.689 in its semifinal.
In the second varsity eights, both the men's and women's boats advanced to grand finals. The women's second varsity eight, in the Marlene Buckley II boat, raced to a second-place time of 6:57:052, just over a second behind UMass. The boat will next race in the grand final Saturday at 8:35 a.m. The men's second varsity eight, racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, took second with a time of 6:03.083, edging third-place North Carolina by just under three-tenths of a second. It will race next in the grand final at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday looking to defend its gold medal.
The women's varsity four, racing in the Diane Corle boat, took a first-place finish in the semifinals with a 7:36.574 to advance to Saturday morning's grand final at 7:45 a.m. The men's second varsity four, racing in the LeBow College of Business boat, finished second in its heat with a time of 7:13.878 to move into Saturday's grand final at 9:15 a.m.
The freshmen eights advanced to the grand finals with impressive times. The women's freshmen eight, racing in the Marlene Buckley boat, took first in its semifinal with a time of 7:25.298 to move into Saturday's grand final at 9:45 a.m. The men's freshmen eight, racing in the Joseph Greipp boat, took the top time in its time trial before winning its heat with a time of 6:10.255 to move into the grand final at 9:55 a.m. on Saturday.
The Dragons started the event with two boats already in grand finals. The men's third varsity eight races in the Lois Krall boat at 8:50 a.m. in a field of five on Saturday, while the women's third varsity eight follows at 8:55 a.m. in the Maria Papadakis boat in an abbreviated field of three.
Drexel also advanced the men's varsity four (Bella Santorum boat) to the petite final as well as the women's pair and men's freshmen four (Sandra Lee Sheller boat) to third finals.
Drexel has won the overall title at the event in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The victory in 2013 was the Dragons' first Dad Vail title in program history. Drexel is just the second school in the last 20 years to win the event at least four times in a row and is now looking to tie Purdue, which won it all five times in a row from 2000-04. The Dragons have also won the men's points title in 2013 and 2015.
Last season, the Dragons won a program-record seven medals en route to their fourth straight overall title. They won the gold in the men's second varsity eight and men's freshmen eight along with five silver medals in the women's varsity eight, men's varsity eight, women's second varsity eight, men's third varsity eight and women's varsity four. Drexel has now won 33 of its 55 all-time Dad Vail medals under the guidance of Director of Rowing Paul Savell, who took over the program in 2007.
Drexel alumni, family, friends and supporters are welcomed to watch the Dad Vail events from Drexel's tent near the grandstands and the small parking lot. Download the free Dad Vail Regatta iPhone and iPad app in the App Store. Please stay tuned for any further weather-related schedule changes.
After the Dad Vail Regatta, the women's crew will face a quick turnaround and close out the most important weekend of its season, traveling to the Cooper River in Cherry Hill for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships and a chance at a spot at the NCAA Championships at Mercer Lake. Drexel's men will have some time off from competition before closing out their season at the IRA National Championships on June 2-4 in Sacramento.
