2017 UWW University Freestyle Nationals Brackets
PHILADELPHIA - Drexel wrestler Alex DeCiantis earned a seventh place finish at the UWW University Freestyle Nationals this past weekend in the 86 kilogram weight class. The redshirt junior went 7-2 on the competition on his way to earning All-American status. His only two losses each came at the hands of fellow NCAA qualifiers.
Despite losing his first round bout to Lehigh's Ryan Priesch, DeCiantis battled all the way back through the consolations in an overall bracket that consisted of over 64 wrestlers. He would ultimately go on to defeat Northern Iowa's Jacob Holschlag to secure his seventh place finish.
Six other Drexel wrestlers also competed at the tournament, including Joshua Murphy (97 kilos) who went 3-2 on the weekend and Ebed Jarrell (80 kilos) who went 4-2. Nick Widmann (70 kilos), Zachary Spira (74 kilos), Andrew Mauriello (70 kilos), and Brendan Hasson (61 kilos) each competed as well.
DeCiantis qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career during the 2016-17 season. The Mars, Pa. native earned a sixth place finish in the 184 weight class at the 2017 EIWA Championships. He recorded a career-high 21 wins on the season, including three major decisions, a pin, and a technical fall and went 5-4 against conference opponents and 11-6 in dual competition. DeCiantis was ranked as high as 22nd in the nation in the NCAA Division I Coaches' Ranking. He placed third at the 2016 Keystone Classic earlier in the season, as well. A finance major, DeCiantis was also named to the 2017 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I All-Academic Individual Team this year for his performance off the mat.
