PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel field hockey team fell Sunday in its season finale to Northeastern at Buckley Field, 3-1. The Dragons finish the season 9-9 (2-4 CAA), while Northeastern advances to CAA Tournament play at 8-10 (4-2 CAA).
The Dragons entered play Sunday controlling their own destiny and needing a win to qualify for the CAA playoffs; however, two Northeastern goals in the opening 10 minutes quickly stifled the Senior Day festivities. Just 90 seconds into the game, Erin Gilchrist came up with a save, but after the rebound bounced around in the circle, June Curry-Lindahl was able to possess the ball and find Kelly Stigas for the goal. Less than eight minutes later, Gilchrist again came up with the save but the ball eventually would find Melanie Weber's stick to give the Huskies an early 2-0 lead. The Dragons would test Northeastern keeper Julia Gluyas a couple of times, but the Dragons would ultimately head into halftime facing a 2-0 deficit.
Northeastern continued its momentum with one more quick score to open the second half. The Huskies capitalized on a penalty corner chance as Rachel Campbell sent in the goal to make it 3-0. With just over eight minutes remaining, the Dragons broke through as a long pass sent in from outside the circle was played in off the keeper, and the ball found Tess Bernheimer in front for the goal. The score was Bernheimer's 12th goal of the season, the most by a Dragon since teammate Megan Wiest scored 12 in 2016. Despite pulling Gilchrist with about four minutes to play, the Dragons could not break through again as they fell, 3-1.
Northeastern outshot Drexel, 14-9, overall and, 9-5, in shots on goal. Gilchrist made six saves in her final collegiate appearance, while Gluyas made four for the Huskies. Drexel had seven corners to Northeastern's six.
Prior to the game, the Dragons honored 11 seniors – Delaney Baxendale, Lindsay Boerner, Kathryn Boyce, Mary Conroy, Amy Ferguson, Erin Gilchrist, Layne Litsinger, Sydney Muntone, Katie Pappas, Rebecca Weinstock and Megan Wiest.
