PHILADELPHIA – Troy Harper came off the bench to score 24 points and Alihan Demir added 21 as Drexel (2-2) downed La Salle, 89-84, on Saturday afternoon at Gola Arena. Harper scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half and went 14-for-16 from the line as the Dragons defeated the Explorers (0-4) for the second straight season for the first time in school history.
The game was tight deep into the second half before Drexel took control in the closing minutes. With the score tied at 57, Miles Brookins was called for a hook on a rebound, which resulted in two shots for James Butler and Drexel with the ball. Butler made both and Trevor John nailed a three-pointer to put the Dragons ahead for good. La Salle wasn't able to get any closer than three points the rest of the way as Drexel won in Gola Arena for the third straight time.
Demir went 5-for-8 in the second half and did a much better job finishing around the rim as he established his career high for points. The Drexel guards were able to get to the basket most of the night, resulting in good looks and lots of free throws. The Dragons went 34-for-40 from the line, which helped to offset an off night from deep (3-for-14).
Freshman Cam Wynter had an impressive game starting in his second collegiate game. He scored 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Butler had 11 points and took advantage of his time at the line, converting seven of his eight attempts.
The game marked the first appearance for La Salle Head Coach Ashley Howard against his former team. Howard, who played and coached for Drexel, took over the program this past spring. Cheddi Mosely and Isiah Dees each added 13. The Explorers shot well from deep, making 11 of their 24 long-range attempts, but had 14 turnovers which led to 14 Drexel points.
Drexel will return to the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Wednesday afternoon. The Dragons will play Boston University at 3 p.m. on the day before Thanksgiving.
